The Ebb Tide

GIVEAWAY

LEWIS, BEVERLY
THE EBB TIDE

Sallie Riehl has dreamed of traveling at least once before settling down to join church, so she is thrilled at an unexpected summer opportunity to nanny in Cape May for a well-to-do family. However, saying even a temporary good=bye to Paradise Township means forgoing baptism another year, as wellas leaving behind a would-be beau. Yet the weeks in Cape May soon prove unforgettable as Sallie meets a Mennonite young man whose friendship she quickly begins to cherish. Has she been too hasty with her promises, or will she only find what her heart is longing for back home?

My Review:

Trademark Beverly Lewis. She has such a distinctive voice. Reading her novels is like listening to a traditional storyteller. It's easy to slip into the pages of one of her books and lose yourself in the story. And she always writes from such interesting perspectives. And her first lines are always killer hooks. Like this one:

"I was born with wanderlust in my heart."

Not the confession one would anticipate from a young Amish woman. It's that wanderlust that sets Sallie apart. Keeps her from taking baptism classes each summer, Has her working extra hours to save up some travel money. She wants one big adventure before she can settle back into life with the People.

A beautiful coming of age story.that celebrates the wisdom and peace of following God's leading on your life, despite how difficult the journey might be.

  1. I have been so excited for this new Lewis novel since I've seen it around! She was the first Amish writer I discovered when I was first looking for Christian fiction books years ago. I really love her writing voice, style and story-telling ability. I'm so glad by your review that those things haven't changed one bit about her :-) I would be so thrilled to win this, thanks for the chance, Kav.

    1. She consistently delvers every single book. That gentle storyteller's voice is so clear and true. And I find the way she always has a prologue and epilogue in first person but the story is in third. I can't think of anyone else who does that. Good luck, Trixi.

  2. Beverly Lewis was the first Amish author I've read and is still my favorite in this genre. I have been looking forward to reading 'Ebb Tide' but when I went to our local Christian bookstore it wasn't on the shelf. Sadly the store is closing it's doors soon and I won't be able to visit the friends I've made there over the years, or peruse the books on its shelves.

    1. Oh, that's so sad, Tammi. My Christian bookstore closed a year and a half ago but then some folks kept the space and opened it as more of a warehouse Christian store so most of the books are older, discontinued or on sale, but they still do get some new books. Just not as many titles as they used to. And the downside is the fiction is on the second floor and their lift doesn't work. I'm disabled so I can't get up to the second floor without the lift. :-( So I'm missing that bookstore fellowship too. Good luck!

  9. I just finished this last night, Kav. Don't you just want to visit Cape May? Or better yet - live there!!? I have stayed at several cool beaches here in SC, but none to rival Beverly's Cape May. I think Beverly Lewis's personality shines out in alot in this book bc there was not ONE bad character in it. They were all sweet. Especially Sallie and Autumn. And Kevin and Frannie. And Perry and Aunt Essie. See?...all sweet. Lol Sorry, didn't mean to leave another review...just got carried away from my beach trip & talking books. ;-)

  22. Wow, this book is truly relevant to where my daughter is right now in her life. I've always said my daughter has wanderlust. Last year, at 17, was the first time we let her travel alone and she went 3 different places - always to where we had friends or family. Right now, she is in Mexico with YWAM as a nanny to a pastor of our church and his family. In September, she leaves for her own training and outreach with YWAM. I always new she would travel, but I'm thrilled that right now she's doing it through a Christian ministry.

You know, I haven't yet read a book by Beverly Lewis. You would think that when I started enjoying Amish fiction that I would have started there. ------ tlhcoupon(at)hotmail(dot)com

    1. Wow -- you do have a daughter with wanderlust! What a blessing it's through a Christian ministry but it still would be hard to have her so far away.

Beverly Lewis books are classics -- she has a very distinctive storytelling style -- different from other, newer authors to the genre. Good luck, Terrill.
