Star Witness

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
STAR WITNESS

She thought she was safe...

Mackenzie Winters spent years building a life in Witness Protection, but when someone shoots at her, she fears her cover has been blown. Could the brother of the drug lord she put away be here for revenge? Mackenzie must rely on her handler's twin, world-weary Delta Force soldier Aaron Hanning, to protect her. Aaron doesn't want to be anyone's hero, but he can't let this brave woman die. Now, with danger stalking them, they'll have to make a daring choice that means life or death—for them both.

My Review:

You might want to set a timer to remind yourself to breathe every so often before you start reading Star Witness. And try not to blink -- you might miss something important. :-) This is Phillips's second book and it is just as intense as her first. And bonus -- fans of her debut novel, Double Agent, will be thrilled to discover that Doug and Sabine take on prominent secondary roles in this book. Rife with danger and action, Mackenzie and Aaron can't seem to keep ahead of the mercenaries that want her dead. Their tenuous romance barely has time to flicker to life as they dodge bullets and countless perils. Another compelling romantic suspense from an author who is making a name for herself in this popular genre.

Stranded with the Rancher

GIVEAWAY

RADCLIFFE, TINA
STRANDED WITH THE RANCHER

The Doctor and the Cowboy

Stranded at single father Dan Gallagher's ranch during a Colorado blizzard, Dr. Beth Rogers is counting the days till the roads are clear. She can't wait to leave for her exciting new life in New York. But suddenly the big-city doctor is delivering babies in log cabins, helping to feed newborn calves and teaching Dan's little girl to play hymns on the piano. No-nonsense Beth even throws a snowball or two at the handsome, love-shy cowboy. She thought she had her heart set on leaving, so why does she dream of Dan asking her to stay forever?

My Review:

Watching this hero and heroine dance around their obvious attraction is deliciously frustrating. It's the kind of read where you want the hero to kiss the girl already, but you know if he does the story will be almost over so you persevere through the almosts in gleeful anticipation.

Beth's story tugged at my heartstrings. She comes from a past that has left glaring gaps in her psyche. When we first meet her she's living her life from a scripted five year plan. There is no room for variations. Rigid. Desperate to fill the emptiness with busyness. But God has His own plans and they veer in a whole different direction. It takes a blizzard and a series of life experiences Beth could never have imagined to turn her around.

Her abandoned wonder at the simplest things really touched a chord with me. For all her academic success, she is really a lost soul. You might say Dan is just what the doctor ordered. A full time pharmacist (and part-time rancher), he has the prescription that could save Beth's life...if she has the courage to follow through with it.

A Lady's Honor

GIVEAWAY

EAKES, LAURIE ALICE
A LADY'S HONOR

On the cliffs of 19th-century Cornwall, a spirited, impetuous young woman is torn between the honor of her family and the longing of her heart.

England, 1811

A tarnished reputation. A distant home. A forced engagement to a dangerous man. When Elizabeth Trelawny flees London, she has more than one reason to run. And when her carriage, pursued by her would-be fiancé, is caught in a storm, she quickly accepts the help of a dark stranger. Anything to get back to Cornwall.

But Rowan Curnow is not exactly a stranger. He’s not quite a gentleman either. Class disparity once kept him from courting Elizabeth . . . even if it didn’t keep him from kissing her.

The couple elude their pursuers and reach Bastion Point, Elizabeth’s future inheritance and the one place she calls home. But in the very act of spiriting her to safety, Rowan has jeopardized Elizabeth’s inheritance—if her grandfather ever learns she spent the night, however innocently, in the company of a man.

When smugglers unite the pair in a reckless, flirtatious alliance—an alliance that both challenges the social norms Elizabeth has been raised to revere and rattles Rowan’s fledgling faith in God. Elizabeth must choose between the obedience of a child and the desires of a woman: cling to the safety of her home or follow the man she loves.

My Review:

Gothic meets Regency and sends me into a frenzied reader's tailspin. Eakes is one of my favourite authors. She knows how to take her readers on an exquisitely tense journey. I lost myself in the pages of A Lady's Honor. Thank goodness I was on holidays and could read straight through because, believe me, there's no good place to leave off until the very end and even then I was put out because it was over. :-)

Hello -- Cornwall in 1811. Cliffs. Moors. Smugglers. Villainous cads. Dashing heroes. And a heroine struggling to find a balance between following duty and spreading her wings. A tight plot propels Elizabeth into one harrowing ordeal after another and Rowan is swept right along with her. He's made a pledge to keep her safe. She wants nothing to do with him...most of the time. He's rude. Arrogant. Totally unsuitable. Even if he's handsome and charming and tender at all the wrong times. Be still my heart. There's nothing left to say except -- awesome!

Home to Chicory Lane

GIVEAWAY

 RANEY, DEBORAH
HOME TO CHICORY LANE

Audrey Whitman's dreams are coming true. Now that their five kids are grown, she and her husband Grant are turning their beloved family home into a cozy bed and breakfast, just a mile outside of Langhorne, Missouri. Opening weekend makes Audrey anxious, with family and friends coming from all over to help celebrate the occasion. But when Audrey's daughter, Landyn, arrives, the U-Haul she's pulling makes it clear she's not just here for a few days. Audrey immediately has questions. What happened in New York that sent Landyn running home? Where was Landyn's husband, Chase? And what else was her daughter not telling her? One thing was for sure, the Chicory Inn was off to a rocky start. Can Audrey still realize her dream and at the same time provide the comfort of home her daughter so desperately needs?

My Review:

Funny and sad and frustrating and perfect in their imperfections -- that's the Whitman family in all their complicated glory. Just like real life. Love the premise -- empty nesters following their dream after all their children are finally settled (and out of the house.) But one comes back on the day of the inn's grand opening and she doesn't show any signs of leaving. Oh the complications and folly -- reading Home to Chicory Lane is like getting a front row seat at the best...and worst...moments in one family's history.

Raney has the uncanny ability of making the reader sympathetic to each character -- even when they are at odds with each other. There I am all righteously indignant on behalf of Landyn and totally on her side, cheering her on. You go, girl. Stand up for yourself. You have rights. And then the very next scene I'm like, seriously, poor Chase, he may be a dunderhead, but I get where he's coming from, poor baby.

And Audrey and Grant find themselves in more than one tenuous position between the start up of the inn and parenting their adult children. There are laugh-out-loud moments and tear-your-hair-out moments and weep-copious-tears-into-your-hankie moments. An all round emotionally satisfying read. Can't wait for the next Chicory Lane installment.

Rescuing the Texan's Heart

GIVEAWAY

OBENHAUS, MINDY
RESCUING THE TEXAN'S HEART

Melting His Heart

Cash Coble is desperate for a change. After working in the family business for ten years, he's stressed out and overworked. When he heads to Colorado to visit his ailing grandfather, he finds his mood lifted by the beautiful woman living next door. After a troubled past, ice climber Taryn Purcell isn't looking for love. Especially not with a charming Texan who's consumed by work. But there's something about Cash that captures her heart. Never one to back down from a challenge, Taryn promises to show Cash how to carve out a happy life—one that includes her.

My Review:

We're back in Ouray, Colorado and I'm loving it. The author has really piqued my curiosity about this mountain town with this series. I dare you to google image 'Ouray, Colorado' and not fall in love. It seems to me that Obenhaus has captured the essence of an incredible community. And ice climbers? I didn't even know they existed. But they do, and Taryn is one. What a cool hobby/occupation for a heroine to have.

Love the dynamics between workaholic Cash and free-spirited Taryn. They clash from the get go, but sparks fly anyway and smolder all the way through a complicated and heartbreaking love story. Heartbreaking because both Taryn and Cash are struggling to find their true identity as they try to put situations from the past into perspective. There's some lovely light-hearted moments and just as many heart tugging ones, but in the end, the Texan's heart is definitely worth rescuing.  If you love a timeless, classic romance that packs an emotional punch, this is the book for you.

Sabatoge at AngelFire Ranch

Jackson Durant would go to any lengths to protect his young daughter and his ranch. He knows the puzzling incidents on his homestead are no accidents. Someone is after him…but who? And why? Reporter Mariah Reyes is determined to find out. She never expected her pursuit of a story on the reclusive rancher would endanger her life—nor that she'd fall for the cowboy. But when Jackson's daughter is kidnapped, she'll do anything to help save the little girl—even if it means becoming a target herself.

My Review:

While not a debut novel for this author, it is her romantic suspense debut and all I can say is may she continue with this genre for a long time to come!

This character-driven story engaged my emotions from the very first chapter. Suspense and mystery seeps through every page but I love how the author takes the time to build the relationship between the hero and heroine. The romance never seems hurried, made all the more edgy by the ever present   danger that escalates as the story progresses. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough but I also wanted to slow down and savor all the delicious nuances of this heart-stopping read.

Danger at the Border

GIVEAWAY

REED, TERRI
DANGER AT THE BORDER

Unsafe territory

When a mysterious toxin threatens lives and livelihoods near the border between the U.S. and Canada, Dr. Tessa Cleary is called to trace the source. But when the no-nonsense doctor is forced to work with border patrol agent Jeff Steele, she finds the lone wolf's dedication to his job—and country—chipping away at the walls around her heart. Just as Tessa and Jeff are about to uncover the toxin's deadly source, armed thugs kidnap them in the forest. Now they must trust each other to survive before time runs out for everyone.

Northern Border Patrol: Keeping the U.S.–Canadian border safe

My Review:

An innovative plot with plenty of action held me spellbound from the very start. I don't think that I have ever read a romantic suspense centered around border patrol agents before. What a great idea for a series!

Much to Jeff's chagrin, Tessa is all about proving herself despite the danger they find themselves in. And he's vexed and more than a little impressed when she shows him up a time or two. Love the connection between this hero and heroine. Charged, complex, exciting. Even funny at times. Great dynamics.

The plot is fraught with tension and danger and numerous twists and turns sure to enthrall readers. Awesome start to a new series.

A Grand Design

GIVEAWAY

STOCKTON, AMBER
A GRAND DESIGN

When Alyssa Denham, a single career woman, wins a fun getaway for two on Mackinac Island where her grandmother lives, she gives her carefree best friend a call. Together, they tour the old shops and hidden treasures of the quaint island while helping Alyssa's grandmother piece together an heirloom quilt. Their quest gains them entrance into the homes of many longtime residents of the island, parts of the city that are otherwise off limits to tourists.

As the quilt's story takes shape, Alyssa gains amazing insight into her grandmother's life . . . and attracts the attention of the handsome Scott Whitman, an island resident in charge of hotel transportation. Will memories of her past keep Alyssa from letting go? Or will the quest to piece together the heirloom quilt restore Alyssa's fractured heart-and bring healing to her entire family?

My Review:

I have had a fascination for Mackinac Island since I was a kid so I was thrilled to discover it as the setting for A Grand Design. Stockton does a wonderful job of infusing the ambiance of the island throughout the story. I almost felt like I was on holiday right along with Alyssa.

Alyssa's grandmother is a gem and I loved the concept of the memory quilt she has Alyssa and her friend helping her with on their island visit. And Scott makes a debonair if somewhat awkward hero. There are some really cute and oh so clumsy scenes between Alyssa and Scott. So much fun to read.

But this is light-hearted romance with an unexpected dark thread woven through it. Alyssa is haunted by her past and the author keeps readers on tenterhooks as she reveals a tragic truth by slow degrees.  However I felt that the book could have been longer to do that thread justice and bring it to a more satisfactory conclusion. I missed a full resolution that a bit more storytelling would bring.

Secrets of Sloane House

GIVEAWAY

GRAY, SHELLEY
SECRETS OF SLOANE HOUSE

Against the backdrop of the 1893 World’s Fair, a young woman finds employment with an illustrious Chicago family—a family who may guard the secret of her sister’s disappearance.

Sloane House is among the most gilded mansions of Gilded Age Chicago. Rosalind Perry, the new housemaid, pours the morning coffee before the hard gaze of her mistress. “It’s simple, Rosalind,” she says. “I am Veronica Sloane, heiress to one of the country’s greatest fortunes. You are simply one in a long line of unsuitable maids.”

Back on the farm in Wisconsin, Rosalind’s plan had seemed logical: Move to Chicago. Get hired on at Sloane House. Discover what transpired while her sister worked as a maid there—and follow the clues to why she disappeared.

Now, as a live-in housemaid to the Sloanes, Rosalind realizes her plan had been woefully simple-minded.

She was ignorant of the hard, hidden life of a servant in a big, prominent house; of the divide between the Sloane family and the people who served them; and most of all, she had never imagined so many people could live in such proximity and keep such dark secrets.

Yet, while Sloane House is daunting, the streets of Chicago are downright dangerous. The World’s Fair has brought a new kind of crime to the city . . . and a lonely young woman is always at risk. But when Rosalind accepts the friendship of Reid Armstrong, the handsome young heir to a Chicago silver fortune, she becomes an accidental rival to Veronica Sloane.

As Rosalind continues to disguise her kinship to the missing maid—and struggles to appease her jealous mistress—she probes the dark secrets of Sloane House and comes ever closer to uncovering her sister’s mysterious fate. A fate that everyone in the house seems to know . . . but which no one dares to name.

My Review:

Downton Abbey with a sinister twist. Honestly, I was so engrossed in the story I could barely put it down. The division between classes always sets my teeth on edge and the Sloanes' blatant disregard for the welfare of their servants had my blood boiling.  Not to mention the perverse loyalty those serving the Sloanes have to the family. Poor Rosalind is like a lamb being led to the slaughter as she tries to navigate all the menacing nuances of this prestigious house in her quest to discover what happened to her sister.

Reid is her only ally but he costs her more grief than help most of the time. He's a fascinating character -- the product of new wealth trying to gain entrance into the upper echelons of society. He needs to find a wife from an established family to gain full acceptance but his heart just isn't in it. His inner battle over societal expectations and his own personal values makes for a fascinating read.

Gray weaves a compelling plot charged with suspense and heartache and an impossible romance and I found it utterly captivating. Thank goodness it is the first in a series. I'm already anxious for the spring when Deception at Sable Hill is due to be released.

Under a Turquoise Sky

GIVEAWAY

CARTER, LISA
UNDER A TURQUOISE SKY

When federal agent Aaron Yazzie is assigned to protect the only witness to a drug cartel execution, he hides Kailyn Eudailey in the safest place he knows . . . the vast, untamed wilderness of the Navajo Reservation.

Transporting Kailyn to New Mexico may not be as easy as Aaron would like. Kailyn is a high-maintenance Southern belle who is determined to assert her independence at every step. Although Aaron's job is to protect her from the dangers that could get them both killed, Kailyn is getting to him. As an undercover agent, Aaron has grown adept at playing many roles. But will he be able to embrace his true identity and God’s plan for his life in order to keep Kailyn alive?

My Review:

Extraordinary! An edgy romantic suspense that starts out all gritty, page-turning, read-with-your-eyes-closed good and then the author lulls the reader into a false sense of security when Kailyn and Aaron reach the Navaho Reservation until suddenly...Wham! Pow! Bam! Reader shell shock during the hair-raising conclusion.

Definitely grittier than most Christian romantic suspense novels, Under a Turquoise Sky addresses a number of social issues and the author doesn't pull any punches. She writes with unflinching honesty laced with compassion. That's really evident in her tough-as-nails hero, Aaron. Probably one of the most amazing character arcs I have ever read. His faith journey alone is worth the read.

By contrast, Kailyn comes from a family of wealth and power but that doesn't make her any less lost. The two together are explosive! Some of the best parts of the book are their arguments. Infuriating and funny all at the same time. Outrageous accusations, snappy comebacks, biting sarcasm -- whew, these two know how to keep a reader on her toes. But when they see eye-to-eye, oh-la-la, it is absolute toe-curling goodness.

An extraordinary host of secondary characters bring even more depth to this incredible story, and honestly, the rez has a character all of its own too. A fascinating read from beginning to end. My first by Lisa Carter, but it won't be my last.

Blue Ridge Reunion

GIVEAWAY

 ROSS, MIA
BLUE RIDGE REUNION

Book 1-Barrett's Mill: In the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a family legacy leads to love.

Chelsea Barnes never expected to see her high school rival, golden boy Paul Barrett, again. But when Paul applies for a loan to renovate his family's historic mill, it's Chelsea who the bank sends to her tiny hometown to assess the property—and Paul. It's her chance to prove herself to her boss, and Chelsea won't let Paul stand in her way. Paul would do anything to restore the mill for his ailing grandfather. Even allow the lovely Chelsea to help. Together, they just might build something beautiful…a happily-ever-after.

My Review:

Another promising series from a wonderful author. I found the idea of restoring an old mill steeped in history really appealing. And Ross does a wonderful job creating a viable small town community. So realistic I want to arrange a vacation there. Alas Barrett's Mill is a figment of the author's very active imagination and I can only travel there through stories.

The read is smooth and sweet and would easily translate well into a made for TV movie script. I could see everything playing out in my mind in such vivid detail. A great host of characters in a town with a unique character all of its own. Loved the dynamics of big city success versus small town charm. A wonderful read with an uplifting romance that made my heart sing.

Deadline

GIVEAWAY

BLACK, MAGGIE K.
DEADLINE

The perfect crime

No one but reporter Jack Brooks believes three seemingly unrelated deaths are the work of a clever serial killer. Not even the woman he's convinced is the next victim—beautiful wedding planner Meg Duff. Even when he tracks her to her remote Canadian island home in time to save her life, Meg can't—and won't—help the maverick reporter. But time is running out, and as a record storm threatens the island, a killer grows desperate. Only Jack can stop him from getting away with murder. And he must, because now not only is Meg's life at stake, but so is his heart….

My Review:

A clever, intricate plot left me with whiplash by the end! The tension kept building and there were enough suspects crawling out of the woodwork that I nearly threw up my hands in defeat and hung up my armchair sleuth membership badge. But I'm no quitter so I persevered and got things thoroughly wrong before I got them half right. Chalk one up for the ingenuous author.

Loved the fact that Jack and Meg are plain ordinary folk caught up in a whirlwind of murder and mayhem. Jack's gritty journalistic background gives him a daredevil persona which Meg perceives as reckless and dangerous. This hero and heroine are living examples of the adage 'opposites attract'. A fiery read cover to cover.

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn

GIVEAWAY

BENTON, LORI
THE PURSUIT OF TAMSEN LITTLE JOHN

Frontier dangers cannot hold a candle to the risks one woman takes by falling in love
In an act of brave defiance, Tamsen Littlejohn escapes the life her harsh stepfather has forced upon her. Forsaking security and an arranged marriage, she enlists frontiersman Jesse Bird to guide her to the Watauga settlement in western North Carolina. But shedding her old life doesn’t come without cost. As the two cross a vast mountain wilderness, Tamsen faces hardships that test the limits of her faith and endurance.

Convinced that Tamsen has been kidnapped, wealthy suitor Ambrose Kincaid follows after her, in company with her equally determined stepfather. With trouble in pursuit, Tamsen and Jesse find themselves thrust into the conflict of a divided community of Overmountain settlers. The State of Franklin has been declared, but many remain loyal to North Carolina. With one life left behind and chaos on the horizon, Tamsen struggles to adapt to a life for which she was never prepared. But could this challenging frontier life be what her soul has longed for, what God has been leading her toward? As pursuit draws ever nearer, will her faith see her through the greatest danger of all—loving a man who has risked everything for her?

My Review:

I swear this author has a time machine and travels back to the 18th century at will just so she can get all the details right. There isn't any other explanation for the rich, evocative text that creates the ambiance of another world. The scents, the sounds, the very feel of the air...I became immersed in the story from the very first page. What an incredibly rich, captivating read.

The time period is fascinating and not as popular in historical romance so that alone makes it a refreshing read. I'm beginning to appreciate the early colonists even more than the pioneers thanks to this author in particular.

There is an intricate balance in Benton's storytelling -- her distinctive voice blends faith, drama and humour into an enticing package that makes it hard to put down. A complex story, deep characterization and more than one startling plot surprise kept me eagerly turning pages.

And the romance -- oh my! Toe-curling, swoonworthy and heart palpitating! A definite must read for historical romance lovers.

The Wrangler's Inconvenient Wife

GIVEAWAY

WILLIAMS, LACY
THE WRANGLER'S INCONVENIENT WIFE

Marriage of inconvenience

With no family to watch over them, it's up to Fran Morris to take care of her younger sister, even if it means marrying a total stranger. Gruff, strong and silent, her new husband is a cowboy down to the bone. He wed Fran to protect her, not to love her, but her heart has never felt so vulnerable.

Trail boss Edgar White already has all the responsibility he needs at his family's ranch in Bear Creek, Wyoming. He had intended to remain a bachelor forever, but he can't leave Fran and her sister in danger. And as they work on the trail together, Edgar starts to soften toward his unwanted wife. He already gave Fran his name…can he trust her with his heart?

Wyoming Legacy: United by family, destined for love

My Review:

This is the third in the Wyoming Legacy series and I can't believe I missed the first two! What an awesome read! There's danger lurking from all sides in this wild west tale. Talk about adventure! From wild critters to vermin of the human kind and everything in between. Poor Fran and Emma are plopped in the middle of it all with no one to watch out for them except a passel of cowboys with hearts of gold. (What a tough row for a heroine to hoe!)The biggest and brawniest (and stubbornest) is Edgar, the hapless bronco who snags inconvenient wife, Fran. And the fun really starts when she promptly stampedes her way into his heart though he's loathe to admit it. A delicious romance with plenty of action.
