The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good

GREER, PETER
THE SPIRITUAL DANGER OF DOING GOOD

Charity and Service Have a Dark Side

You want to live out the Gospel by serving others, and you're willing to sacrifice your time, money, and perhaps even your safety. But do you realize the spiritual dangers you face as you serve? Peter Greer, the CEO of a Christian nonprofit, found that serving others and seeking justice actually did him harm. He shares how something that started with the noblest of intentions got off track--and how he got back on course. His story is a compassionate warning for anyone who works in ministry or charitable nonprofits, from CEOs to weekend volunteers.

My Review:

An interesting concept for a book. What it comes right down to, I think, is the importance of finding balance in our life -- and that definitely includes the charitable aspects. Greer candidly explores his own pitfalls in a compassionate and easy to read way. But just because the words flow doesn't make them easy to digest. This is a very thought-provoking look at finding the ultimate balance in a Christian life.

A Plain Disappearance

GIVEAWAY

FLOWER, AMANDA
A PLAIN DISAPPEARANCE

It’s Christmastime in Amish Country, and Chloe Humphrey has begun settling into her life in Appleseed Creek excited to see where her new relationship with Timothy Troyer will lead. Unfortunately it leads to murder when the couple discovers the body of Amish teenager Katie Lambright while on their first date.

Near the scene there is evidence that Timothy’s friend and auto mechanic Billy Thorpe is involved with the crime. The police reveal Billy is not really who he said he was and has been living the last decade in Knox County under a stolen alias. Now, Chloe and Timothy must find Billy, bring him to justice, or prove his innocence.

My Review:

The third book in An Appleseed Creek Mystery, A Plain Disappearance is just as good as the first two. Readers will be reunited with some well-loved characters that feel like family. No worries for those of you who haven't read the other books in the series though because this story reads well as a standalone but series fans will still get an extra kick out of it. :-)

The mystery is solid and I totally didn't solve it until the very end. Love it when a mystery keeps me on my toes like that.  Flower really knows how to pace the suspense while interspersing sweet romance and a few interesting character twists  along the way. And the solid message of forgiveness adds substance and wonder to an already stellar read. This is a quirky, cozy mystery that you don't want to miss out on!

Bleeding Heart

GIVEAWAY

STOKES, AMBER
BLEEDING HEART

Summer 1886

Sally Clay’s livelihood has been snatched away, but in its place arises an opportunity to escape from her sordid past and an unrelenting, unwanted suitor. Boarding a train with a heartsick rancher and an enigmatic miner, she leaves Virginia City behind and heads to Northern California, waiting for the chance to make right what went wrong three long years before.

But the road to revenge is far from smooth. Sally soon learns that the jagged pieces of a broken heart can far too easily wound the hearts of others – and hers isn’t the only heart that’s broken. Tragedy and fear dog her steps as she flees from the redwood forests to the high desert and back again. Will her bleeding heart ever find a way and a place to heal?

A desperate soiled dove. Three men who come to care for her. One man determined to claim her.

All on a journey that will show them what true love really involves.

My Review:

Amber Stokes is well known around the Christian writing blogoshphere and Bleeding Heart is her debut novel. This is a mini-saga with more than its fair share of angst as emotionally wounded characters struggle to make their way in a difficult time and place. They each eventually have to take a stand and conquer the demons from their past. Definitely not your traditional romance -- rather an exploration in character growth. An affirmation that past wrongs can be righted by grace and there is always hope for the future.

Stokes keeps her readers on her toes and the story unfolds with surprising twists and turns -- and one very abrupt turn that left this reader reeling. Seriously? She wrote that? No one can accuse this author of predictability!

I have to admit to wishing this story was a little longer. I felt the pacing was hurried in places and a few transitions between scenes and timelines a bit abrupt. I wanted to savor more, sink deeper into the story and spend longer with these characters. The author certainly left me wanting more! Particularly in the case of a certain wounded hero named Myghal. He's the one who stole my heart.

Giveaway Opportunity:

Please note: At the present time Bleeding Hearts is only available in e-book format. However, if you are will to wait, the winner can opt for the paperback edition when it comes in.

Killer Assignment

GIVEAWAY

BLACK, MAGGIE K.
KILLER ASSIGNMENT

Front page news: Murder!

Journalist Katie Todd wanted her name as a byline on the front page, not in the obituaries. When an assignment goes very wrong, she finds herself pursued by ruthless kidnappers. Her only hope is the enigmatic and handsome Mark Armor. All clues point to him being the enemy of her enemy, but is he a friend—or something much more dangerous? Every move Mark makes to help Katie brings him closer to the life he left behind, but he can't say no to the beautiful writer. Will the secrets of his past put Katie in even more danger?

My Review:

This is the first book I've read written by Maggie K. Black, but it won't be my last! Gripping from the very first page, this author knows how to build spine-tingling suspense in tense, desperate scenes. And the pace doesn't let up! My heartbeat still hasn't settled back to normal yet!

A really appealing aspect of the Killer Assignment is that neither the hero or heroine are in any kind of law enforcement. That brought a fresh perspective to this thrilling suspense. Katie's journalism background gives her a gritty, never-say-die attitude and Mark's numerous ventures into third world countries to give aid has prepared him for the unexpected. They make an unbeatable team. And their rocky romance is just as thrilling as the suspense. Great read from a new-to-me author.

The Soldier's Sister

GIVEAWAY

GUISTI, DEBBY
THE SOLDIER'S SISTER

Who will protect her?

Someone wants Stephanie Upton dead. A warning to leave town is just the beginning. Fearing for her life, Stephanie turns to Special Agent Brody Goodman for help and protection. But can she trust him when he's convinced her own brother is a prime suspect? Torn between her devotion to two men—an estranged brother whose trust she yearns to regain and an agent she may be falling for—Stephanie doesn't know whom or what to believe. As feelings between her and Brody escalate, she'll have to choose sides to stay alive.

Military Investigations: Serving their country and solving crimes

My Review:

Giusti gives readers a glimpse into the day to day life of an active army base while expertly blending suspense and romance. I love the way she portrays community among the military -- it is something I don't have first hand knowledge of so reading Giusti's books increases my understanding and respect for the men and women who serve in the military. I was particularly fascinated by Stephanie's profession as an army advocate. In a day when we often hear news stories about how we are failing our fallen soldiers, I found it encouraging to read about the Army Wounded Warrior Program.

And the suspense is equally as fascinating. Something menacing from Stephanie's past is a force to be reckoned with in her present. Her hopeful reunion with her estranged brother spirals into a complicated haze of adrenaline-pumping suspense that kept me turning pages. Gotta love a suspense with so many hooks you're caught until the very end!

And then there's Special Agent Brody Goodman -- blissful sigh. I fell hard. A pure gentleman of steel with a protective streak guaranteed to generate heart palpitations in gentle readers.

This latest book in  Giusti's Military Investigations is a winning combination of heart and action guarnteed to satisfy romantic suspense lovers.

The Promise Box

GIVEAWAY

GOYER, TRICIA
THE PROMISE BOX

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive 'resident' status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides! In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer's Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother's death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother's most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational 'tell-all' book about the Amish. Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood---and her potential betrayal of her community---keep her from committing her whole heart?

My Review:

Goyer fans will be thrilled to find some familiar faces within the pages of her latest book. That's a bonus to an already winning read. I just love the concept of a promise box and found it a great catalyst for Lydia's faith journey.

This is a sweet romance that develops between two hesitant people who are struggling with childhood hurts. I thought Goyer did a realistic job of portraying the way both Lydia and Gideon held onto unrealistic feelings of responsibility because of their past. Even though it appears irrational to an observer, it is very real to them and does colour their actions as adults which creates an interesting tension as their romance develops.

The Promise Box is an inspirational romance that will inspire and encourage readers even as it entertains.

Afloat

GIVEAWAY

HEALY, ERIN
AFLOAT

Architect Vance Nolan has crafted a marvel—shining apartments floating in the peaceful cove of a winding river. When the project is partially occupied and about to make investors rich, a sinkhole gives way.

Then torrential rains quickly flood the cove, leaving a handful of builders, investors, and residents cut off from the rest of the world.

The motley group is bitterly divided over how to survive.

Vance insists they wait for rescue. Developer Tony Dean wants to strike out into the darkness. And single-mom Danielle Clement, obligated to each man and desperate to protect her young son, Simeon, isn’t sure which one is wiser.

Power failure, an unnatural daytime darkness, explosions, and then a murder slowly expose hidden intentions and dark histories. But Simeon has spotted something bright underwater—beautiful, shifting lights in the dark depths.

In this watery world, everyone’s secrets will eventually come to light. And deliverance may mean more than just getting out alive.

My Review:

Complex characters thrown into an equally complex plot creates an engrossing read that was hard to put down. Healy creates a desperate imagery with her words that brought a spine-tingling mood to my read. The supernatural element brings a subtle depth to this disaster story. Afloat is definitely a page-turner with all its twists and turns and also packs a few gasp-out-loud surprises that I did not see coming. A spellbinding tale you do not want to miss.

Falling for the Lawman

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
FALLING FOR THE LAWMAN

Piper McKinney's got her hands full. Busy saving her farm from developers, and her family from trouble, she has no time for love. Not even for the handsome state trooper who becomes her new neighbor. But Zach Harrison can't ignore the girl next door. Even though he gave up the farming life years ago, Piper intrigues him, and her plight calls out to the protector in him. Piper may not want a man, especially one with a badge, but Zach will show her that he's here to serve and protect…and love.

My Review:

The thing I love most about Herne's writing is her ability to create an emotional punch with a scarcity of words. Take a gander: "...they moved down the driveway toward the road, not touching, but linked by the joy of a small child between them." (p. 80) Doesn't a feel-good tingle wash over you at those words? This is early on in Piper and Zach's relationship and believe me there is a mountain of obstacles blocking their path but those sweet words gave me hope as I eagerly anticipated reading the rest of their love story. I just had to savor that sentence first. And that's what a Ruthy book is all about. Savoring every last word while images explode in your mind. Absolute bliss. Another not-to-be-missed read by this prolific (thankfully) author.

Pattern for Romance

GIVEAWAY

GADE, CARLA OLSON
PATTERN FOR ROMANCE

Honour Metcalf's quilting needlework is admired by a wealthy customer of the Boston Mantua-maker for whom she works. In need of increasing her earnings, she agrees to create an elaborate white work bridal quilt for the dowager's niece. A beautiful design emerges as she carefully stitches the intricate patterns and she begins to dream of fashioning a wedding quilt of her own. When Honour is falsely accused of thievery and finds herself in a perilous position, merchant tailor Joshua Sutton comes to her aid. As he risks his relationships, reputation, and livelihood to prove her innocence, the two discover a grander plan.

My Review:

Pattern for Romance is set in the years just before the American revolution, Gade includes fascinating details into every day life including the political tensions of the time. What a great backdrop for romance!

Joshua is smitten quickly and becomes a knight in shining armor during repeated mishaps that befall Honour. Nothing like a protective, caring, gentleman rising to the rescue for hero material. Unfortunately, Honour isn't appreciative all the time as she struggles for independence in more then one difficult situation.

Gade has woven a intriguing plot with a twist of mystery and gentle romance that makes a quick, satisfying read.

The Outcast

GIVEAWAY

PETERSHEIM, JOLINA
THE OUTCAST

Raised in an Old Order Mennonite community, Rachel Stoltzfus is a strong-willed single woman, content living apart from mainstream society until whispers stir the moment her belly swells with new life. Refusing to repent and name the partner in her sin, Rachel feels the wrath of the religious sect as she is shunned by those she loves most. She is eventually coerced into leaving by her brother-in-law, the bishop.

My Review:

This is a sobering book. There is a distinct absence of light-hearted moments but it is a gripping, often dark tale that I found compelling to read. The author draws on her family Mennonite history to lend real authenticity to a gritty story about condemnation and ultimately forgiveness. It was hard to read at times because I'd become so infuriated over the injustice of it all! I'd have to give way to a bout of ranting before I could continue on with the story.

This is Petersheim's debut novel and I was really struck by her maverick writing style. Chapters alternate between Rachel's first person point of view and the omnipotent point of view from a recently deceased bishop who narrates the scenes dealing with all the other characters.  It was a bit jarring at first and I found it difficult to adjust to this particular literary rhythm.

Definitely a different look at the popular Mennonite/Amish genre and certainly a read I won't soon forget.

A Canyon Springs Courtship

GIVEAWAY
KAYE, GLYNNA
A CANYON SPRINGS COURTSHIP

A Love Reunited

Councilman Jake Talford is determined to protect his small Arizona town. Even if that means keeping a close eye on former sweetheart Macy Colston. Macy has come to Canyon Springs to get the scoop for her popular blog Hometowns with Heart. The rest of the town council hopes it will bring in the tourists. But Jake's worried she'll turn local gossip into public scandal. He and Macy once shared dreams of a future together. Now it's up to Jake to make her see what's most important in life—love, faith and truth.

My Review:

I love the unique premise at the base of this story. A stroke of genius on the author's part I think -- having the heroine be the author of a high-traffic blog. It really brings a fresh perspective to the plot.

I also love the fact that Jake and Macy have a history...one that ended badly. Talk about upping the angst factor. Tension just crackled off the page every time they shared a scene. And poor Jake kept sticking his foot in his mouth which only served to raise Macy's defensive hackles. Sometimes that made me laugh out loud and sometimes I just wanted to clunk their heads together and admonish them to play nice. :-)

Kaye does a magnificent job of weaving a taut tale about forgiveness, love and second chances. This is the kind of read you'll want to power through and whoosh out a sigh of pure satisfaction when you reach the end.

Try, Try Again

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
TRY, TRY AGAIN

Powerful and rich, Wall Street financial wizard Conor Bradstreet had it all until his son's death showed him otherwise. A decade older and wiser, Conor now faces the final step in his healing - making peace with his ex-wife.

Peace with Conor is the last thing on Alicia Bradstreet's mind. Losing her son took more than her heart, it darkened her soul. But with their daughter's engagement to a single father comes the expectation of harmony. Can Alicia move beyond her anger... and Conor beyond his guilt... to Try, Try Again?

Join award-winning author Ruth Logan Herne as she spins a journey of faith, hope and love in her typical heart-touching style, a path that winds around the honor of a derelict former cop, a small child who misses her mother and a dog just aching for a second chance... much like his new owners.

My Review:

If ever there was a book destined to be a movie, this is it. Honestly somebody call Hallmark and tell them we've found their newest project. The pacing, the dialogue, the depth in characterization and plot -- all create the magic producers of Hollywood blockbusters crave. It even includes a small child, a dog and an angel in the unlikeliest human form.

I was hooked from the gripping opening scene; enthralled as Conor's and Alicia's story unravels. Quick to take sides with Alicia , but Conor got under my skin and reminded me that grace and forgiveness aren't just Christian catch phrases but precepts to live by. Their past history upped the romantic tension and passion simmers just beneath the surface in many taut scenes. Delicious.

If you like a romance that will give your goosebumps goosebumps and might just clean you out of Kleenex (in fact buy extra before you start), then Try, Try Again is the book for you.

Rocky Coast Romance

GIVEAWAY

ROSS, MIA
ROCKY COAST ROMANCE

A Place for Redemption

Journalist Bree Farrell heads to the village of Holiday Harbor to salvage her career. And walks straight into the arms of handsome young mayor Cooper Landry. Cooper's fighting to keep his sleepy Maine community from the clutches of big-city developers. And Bree knows it's a major scoop. But the longer she's in town, the more she's won over by the quirky townsfolk—and the charming Cooper. Will Bree ever follow her heart instead of a story and make Holiday Harbor her permanent byline?

Holiday Harbor: Where love is just around the bend.

My Review:

Sigh -- I can still smell the tangy sea air! Love how the author transported me to coastal Maine. Loved the quirky town folk even more. What a riot of secondary characters! They brought the story to life -- especially Sammy. I mean who can resist an oversized Newfoundland? Not me, that's for sure. I drooled over Sammy. :-) In fact he almost took the lead away from the hero.

Almost.

Luckily I fall hard for a man who loves animals so Cooper managed to edge Sammy out by a smidgen.  Well, he had other redeeming qualities too -- like a fierce protectiveness for what he loves which includes his sleepy town. There is something very appealing about a stoic Easterner who digs in his heels when it comes to change -- especially where matters of the heart are concerned.

And Bree is just the woman to convince Cooper that change can be a good thing...maybe. But she's embroiled in her own turmoil, trying to salvage her career and her conscience over a past mistake. The Holiday Harbor assignment is a fresh start but she doesn't intend to end her new career there. Conflict and angst abound as both hero and heroine try to figure out what they want in their future.

I'm thrilled to say this is the first in a new Love Inspired series and I'm anxious to get back to Holiday Harbor for so more reading fun.

A Simple Change

GIVEAWAY

MILLER, JUDITH
A SIMPLE CHANGE

She never imagined a simple change could be so complicated...

Middle Amana, Iowa, 1881

When her parents decide to sell their home and move to the Amana Colonies, Jancey Rhoder must make a difficult decision. Should she give up her beloved teaching job and her carefree life in Kansas City to go with them?

Her suitor, Nathan Woodward, doesn't want her to go, but Jancey feels she must give this new life a try. Her mother is sick, and these next few months may be the last Jancey gets to spend with her. But will this move spell the end of her relationship with Nathan? And when life in Amana is far more mysterious and challenging than Jancey expected, will she choose to return to the city, or will she make this unique place her forever home?

My Review:

I always know I'm in for a treat when I open up a Judith Miller book. I know I am going to get a read that is steeped in history with engaging characters and surprising plot twists that leave me gasping "Wh-a-a-a-a-t?!"  And that's exactly what happened in A Simple Change. There I was reading along, enjoying the story, kind of plotting out what was going to happen next (I am such a back-seat reader!) and then wham, the story takes a sharp turn and dive into the unexpected. So then I had to stay up past midnight (and I am not a night owl) to delve into this new development. Talk about hooking your readers and reeling them in!
