Waiting for Sunrise

GIVEAWAY

EVERSON, EVA MARIE
WAITING FOR SUNRISE

Sometimes finding your future means making peace with your past

Patsy Milstrap wishes she could leave her past behind. Though she tries to put on a brave front for the sake of her family, the wounds still ache, and the scars on her soul are still deeply felt. At her concerned husband's gentle insistence, they take a vacation from South Carolina on Cedar Key, an idyllic island on Florida's Gulf Coast. A week in paradise will do them good, he says.

When a familiar--and most unexpected--face greets her at a seaside restaurant, Patsy knows she can no longer run from the past. But what will opening old wounds mean? And what will the future hold?

With a large helping of Southern charm, Waiting for Sunrise is a touching story of family, young love, and the need for forgiveness. Eva Marie Everson expertly draws out the bittersweet moments of life, weaving them into a tale that will envelop your soul.

My Review:

A compelling story that draws the reader in without apologies for the complexities of life. Real, hard-hitting, emotional -- Everson knows how to draw on a myriad of truths, not all of them pretty, in order to offer up joy and hope. A reminder of how each  individual is the result of their own 'back story' -- all the good and the bad, the realities and the misconceptions that swirl together and merge into our psyche. Waiting for Sunrise is also about unconditional love -- in all it's varied forms. A gut-wrenching yet oddly comforting read that has firmed my resolve to be gentler and more understanding to those around me.

Short-Straw Bride

GIVEAWAY

WITEMEYER, KAREN
SHORT-STRAW BRIDE

No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a long-standing debt compels her to take the risk.

Years of constant vigilance hardens a man. Yet when Travis Archer comes across a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can't bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt prompt him to attempt to rescue her once again.

Despite the fact that Travis is no longer the gallant youth Meredith once dreamed about, she vows to stand by his side. But will love ever be hers? Or will Travis always see her as merely a short-straw bride?

My Review:

You know how Amazon and Christianbook.com have star ratings for books? And how five stars are the best? Well, Short-Straw Bride is a 5 Toe-Curler! Oh la la, but Witemeyer knows how to build romantic tension, how to tantalize her reader, how to deliver the most spine-tingling, goosebump-raising interludes that call for the fainting couch to be brought up from the basement! What? You don't own a fainting couch? Well then read this book while lying on the ground or it could be injurious to your health!

Purely enchanting -- the author manages to create an almost magical bond between Travis and Meredith from their youthful encounter and then builds it into a crescendo of emotions. It's funny, touching, dramatic, frustrating, endearing, faith-promoting...all the good things that make a story more then just a good read. This is one awesome book filled with characters you'll come to love (and hate) and a fast-paced story that you'll want to slow down lest the ending come to soon. A don't miss read for every romance lover's list.

Love in Disguise

GIVEAWAY

COX, CAROL
LOVE IN DISGUISE

Can she solve the crime before they uncover her true identity?

Jobless and down to her last dime, Ellie Moore hears about a position with the Pinkerton Detective Agency and believes it's the perfect chance to put her acting skills and costumes to use. Reluctantly, the agency agrees to give her one assignment, one chance to prove herself. Disguised as Lavinia Stewart, a middle-aged widow, Ellie travels to Arizona to begin her investigation. When the need arises, she also transforms into the dazzling Jessie Monroe, whose vivacious personality encourages people to talk.

Mine owner Steven Pierce is going to lose his business if he can't figure out who's stealing his silver shipments. In his wildest dreams, he never expected to receive help from a gray-haired widow... or to fall in love with her beautiful niece.

Then the thieves come after Lavinia and Jessie. Ellie isn't safe no matter which character she plays! Should she give up and reveal her true identity? What will Steven do when he realizes the woman he's falling in love with doesn't really exist?

Set in 1880s Arizona, Love in Disguise blends romance, humor, and mystery for a can't-put-down read.

My Review:

Fresh and unique, this historical read has a clever twist that I found very entertaining. Who knew that Pinkerton employed women detectives? Carol Cox that's who, and she uses that knowledge to great advantage. Ellie's driving ambition mixed with desperation make her prime detective material and she's out to prove herself. What she doesn't need is to fall hard for a local miner, especially when she's in the guise of matronly Lavina. There are some wonderfully humorous scenes as a result!

And Steven -- earnest, kind, gallant, and just as desperate to solve the robberies -- that's why he requested assistance from the Pinkerton Agency and why he becomes more and more frustrated when an agent doesn't show up. Little does he realize he's escorting her around town! This cat-and-mouse game is priceless and the mystery is cleverly written. Definitely a great summer read!

The Way Bible

THE WAY BIBLE

Today’s 16–30 year olds are looking for connection to something bigger than themselves. They want something that works and is honest, authentic. Something that they can actually experience. Something that gives them hope. The Way offers a way that works. A way that matters. A way that asks them to step up to something important enough—big enough—to live for. It’s a visual, textual, and interactive experience for a generation that has blurred the boundaries of media. It’s an interactive experience for those ready for collaboration, change, and a challenge. The Way connects a restless generation, a generation looking for direction, to Jesus—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It uses first-person stories, reflections, and questions that bring the Bible to the real world.

My Review:

A very interesting approach to bible study. I think The Way can safely be summed up in one word. Authentic. God's words haven't changed and the the New Living Translation helps to make them clear and understandable but the whole look and feel and approach to this bible is different and very appealing.

The first big difference is the preface for each book in the bible. Not only is a frank summary provided, but the writers flip the biblical circumstances to parallel 21st century ones and that suddenly makes this ancient scripture so relevent to this age. I could easily see myself using any number of them as discussion starters in a group bible study or devotional. The book is worth buying just for that.

The Way also boasts additonal inserts scattered throughout its pages. There is My Story, Lament and Living in the Way and all serve to touch the reader's heart, mind and spirit and make scripture studying all the more fulfilling. In My Story, young Believers share their faith journey. Lament is just that, a personal first person lament that doesn't necessarily supply answers but resonates with the acceptance of faith. Living in the Way segments are hard-hitting short devotionals that contrast the world's view with Christ's.  All made me think, feel and most importantly, challenged me to assess my own spiritual journey.

The Way is definitely a unique addition to any study library.

The Director's Cut

GIVEAWAY

THOMPSON, JANICE
THE DIRECTOR'S CUT

Tia Morales is used to calling the shots. She's the director of the popular sitcom Stars Collide, and her life on set is calculated and orderly. Well, most of the time. But her life outside the studio is another matter. If only she could get her family to behave as well as her stars do! When she starts butting heads with handsome camera operator Jason Harris, it's enough to send a girl over the edge. Will she ever learn to let go and take life--and love--as it comes?

My Review:

The final book in the Backstage Pass series, The Director's Cut still reads like a standalone. I haven't read the other two books in the series but I didn't feel lost with the wide array of characters. Thompson's ingenuous use of a new character arriving on the set in the first few pages in this book proves to be the perfect way to play catchup with the previous storylines in the series. The reader is introduced to everyone right along with secondary character Erin and it's a seamless bridge. Brilliant.

Great comedic pacing with a bite of real-life drama to stir things up. I enjoyed the crazy cast of characters and the sneak peek into the not-always-so-glamorous lives of people in the television industry. And watching Tia struggle with some deep-rooted issues was both frustrating, painful and amusing. Loved how Jason becomes a solid support but only after Tia was willing to take a few risks. The complicated Morales family dynamics up the tension and round out this great summer read.

A Family to Cherish

GIVEAWAY!

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
A FAMILY TO CHERISH

Wanting to do right by his impressionable daughters, widower Cam Calhoun knows they need a woman's touch. But when his high school sweetheart returns to town to open a beauty spa, Cam plans to keep his distance. Meredith Brennan left him without a word over a decade ago. Now talk of hairstyles and nail polish have his tomboy daughters way too excited. Yet when Meredith hires him to make her dream come true, Cam discovers he just might have what she needs most: the love of a family.

My Review:

Another heartwarming story full of hope from Love Inspired author Ruth Logan Herne. It's clear that she has a deep understanding of the human heart, an empathy for others and the ability to convey that gift through her words. Herne's books are never just about the hero and heroine. Her cast of secondary characters add spice to the mix and she teaches a valuable lesson on unconditional love in her latest release. In fact that's a theme that spearheads all the diverse relationships in A Family to Cherish, which makes it an enriching and rewarding read.

Glamorous Illusions

GIVEAWAY!

BERGREN, LISA T.
GLAMOROUS ILLUSIONS

It's the summer of 1913, and Cora Kensington's life on the family farm has taken a dark turn. Not only are the crops failing, but someone dear to Cora is failing as well.

One fateful afternoon, a stranger comes to call, and Cora discovers a terrible secret about her past...a secret that will radically change her future.

Cora is invited to take the "Grand Tour" of Europe, a trip intended to finish of a person's education and solidify an understanding of refinement and ancient culture. As she travels from England to France with kin she's never known, Cora encounters the blessings of a family name, as well as the curses. But when an unbidden love begins to form, she realizes there are far greater challenges ahead...

The first book in the Grand Tour series takes you on a journey of cultural refinement -- but, moreover an inner journey of self-discovery.

MY REVIEW:

Stunning start to a grand new series from one of my favourite authors! Bergren knows how to transport her readers into a different time and place. Using vivid descriptions and compelling characters she creates a breathtaking picture of life among the wealthiest families in Europe. And in so doing throws her heroine smack into the middle of a moral dilemma. And such a dilemma! We should all be forced to live the life of the idle rich to prove our muster! :-) Seriously, it's a great premise and poses some interesting questions both for Cora and her readers.

But be warned: as in her other series, The River of Time, not all loose threads, including the romantic ones, are pulled tight by the end of the book. We will have to wait until Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 before we have a real conclusion. While I'm not usually a fan of run-on series, I gladly make an exception for Lisa T. Bergren. I'll let her whisk me away and keep me dangling for as long as she wants -- providing she promises to come back with more...and more...and more!

Skip Rock Shallows

GIVEAWAY

WATSON, JAN
SKIP ROCK SHALLOWS

Lilly Gray Corbett has just graduated from medical school and decided to accept an internship in the coal camp of Skip Rock, Kentucky. Her beau, Paul, is doing his residency in Boston and can’t understand why Lilly would choose to work in a backwater town. But having grown up in the mountains, Lilly is drawn to the stubborn, superstitious people she encounters in Skip Rock—a town where people live hard and die harder and where women know their place. Lilly soon learns she has a lot to overcome, but after saving the life of a young miner, she begins to earn the residents’ trust.

As Lilly becomes torn between joining Paul in Boston and her love for the people of Skip Rock, she crosses paths with a handsome miner—one who seems oddly familiar. Her attraction for him grows, even as she wrestles with her feelings and wonders what he’s hiding.

My Review:

Christy (Catherine Marshall) meets Dr. Quinn! What an incredible read! Watson has created a memorable community filled with details that made me feel like I'd lived the life of a miner! And Lilly's struggle for acceptance among the tight-knit clans of Kentucky's backwoods country create an intensity in the story that kept me turning pages.

Watson's characters leap off the page and add layers of emotion and intrigue to the plot. And we all know how I love an emotional read. This one doesn't spare the reader's feelings one whit! Skip Rock Shallows is the kind of historical romance that you just want to immerse yourself in. From the beautiful descriptive passages to the quaint sayings and the quiet dignity of the people in Skip Rock's small community -- well, let's just say it all offers up the ultimate in reading pleasure!

Kate's Song

GIVEAWAY

BECKSTRAND, JENNIFER
KATE'S SONG

Kate Weaver was raised in an Amish home and has always been expected to choose baptism and strict observance of the Ordnung. But Kate is blessed with a beautiful singing voice, and when another path leads her to the academy for vocal training, she struggles to understand God’s will for her life. She returns to Apple Lake, haunted by a violent encounter with a fellow student, and finds herself drawn to the peace and devotion of her Amish home. But can she give up her dreams? Or will her calling forever separate her from the people and the way of life she holds so dear?

Nathaniel King has never wavered in his commitment to the community and the Old Order Amish Church into which he is baptized. He has been in love with Kate for as long as he can remember, and he is devastated when she leaves Apple Lake to attend the academy. When Kate returns, will she make his most profound hopes a reality—or will she break his heart all over again?

My Review:

From the riveting first page, Beckstrand caught my attention and held it as I quickly became immersed in Kate's story. This is a thrilling read that packs an emotional wallop. Full of complex issues and important questions, I was pulled betwixt a rock and a hard place right along with Kate, frantically looking for some divine direction. It creeps up on her but not until a summer full of angst...and delight.

The angst stems from her own inner turmoil, events in her past and issues with some of the people in her community. The delight she experiences can be summed up in two words. Nathaniel King. Oh la la! But I fell hard and fast for the hero of this book. He seemed almost too perfect, but I wasn't about to complain even though he fell off his pedestal as the plot thickened and so did my ire.

Jennifer Beckstrand is a welcome newcomer to Amish fiction and I'm thrilled to report that Kate's Song is the first in a three-book series Forever After in Apple Lake. In fact, the second book comes out in August and I can't wait!

The Wedding Journey

GIVEAWAY!

ST. JOHN, CHERYL
THE WEDDING JOURNEY

The mysterious inheritance is the answer to a prayer. Now Irish lass Maeve Murphy and her sisters can come to America! She's sure happiness awaits her, even if it won't—can't—come from widowed ship doctor Flynn Gallagher. Yes, he made her his assistant, but she's not foolish enough to fall for the man all the eligible, wealthy female passengers admire.

Flynn Gallagher may have his pick of ladies, but only one cares as he does for the sick and poor. Flynn vowed never to marry another woman who could break his heart. With Maeve, has his heart found safe harbor at last?

My Review:

Imagine my delight when I uncovered this one at the bottom of a delivery box destined for the recycle bin! Yeeesssss! My TBR pile wasn't bare after all. I had one more book left and what a dream it was! First -- I love all things Irish and this series is entitled the Irish Brides. My heart was in a swoon before I even opened the book and it continued to pit-a-pat right through to the end because the romance is divine! In fact the whole story is a wonderful blend of grit and grace. St. John has created a fascinating community aboard the ship bound for the states. In fact, most of the story takes place on board and is full of interesting historical details about what it must have been like to travel across the Atlantic Ocean on a quest for a better life in the mid 1800s.  Honestly, this book is a gem worthy of  the crown jewels of Ireland! Cue Celtic music, sit back and enjoy this iontach book!(psst...that's Irish for wonderful.)

Annie's Truth

GIVEAWAY!

 SHRIVER, BETH
ANNIE'S TRUTH

After learning the truth about who she really is, can this prodigal daughter be accepted back into the safety and security of home?

Annie Beiler seems to have it all—a loving family in a tight-knit Amish community and the affections of an attractive and respected young man. But when she learns that she was adopted after being found as an abandoned newborn, she sets out on a journey to find out who she is.

Her father is strongly against her decision to leave, as it could mean Meidung, or excommunication from the community and even her family. But Annie knows she must find “the path that has her heart.”

As Annie’s search brings her into the fast-paced world of modern life, she is confronted with all of the temptations she was warned of. Can she make her way back to the order and security of her family? Or will she remain an outsider—torn between her two worlds?

My Review:

This is a book about vivid contrasts. It starts out simply, portraying the idealistic life of a young Amish woman. Her world is perfect, but even from the first page I sensed there was something missing in Annie. A lack of maturity, maybe, or appreciation for what she had. It annoyed me a bit, perplexed me more but was a cunning way for the author to sharpen what was to come -- a gentle foreshadowing of a life swept away in confusion by one simple truth.

Annie's journey could be any of ours - just substitute her search for what you most long for -- but when you get it what then? Does it fill that void that's been gnawing at you? Or does it bring about a change you didn't bargain for? And what about those you love? How does it affect them? Shriver explores all these ramifications with knowledge (she has a social work degree) and compassion and a depth of understanding that leads the reader on a journey she soon won't forget. I welcome this new voice in Amish fiction with open arms and look forward to the next book in the Touch of Grace series.

Chameleon

GIVEAWAY

KENT, JILLIAN
CHAMELEON

How much can you really know about someone?

Lady Victoria Grayson has always considered herself a keen observer of human behavior. After battling a chronic childhood illness that kept her homebound for years, she journeys to London determined to have the adventure of a lifetime.

Jaded by his wartime profession as a spy, Lord Witt understands, more than most, that everyone is not always who they pretend to be. He meets Victoria after the Regent requests an investigation into the activities of her physician brother, Lord Ravensmoore.

Witt and Victoria become increasingly entangled in a plot targeting the lords of Parliament. Victoria is forced to question how well she knows those close to her while challenging Witt’s cynical nature and doubts about God. Together they must confront their pasts in order to solve a mystery that could devastate their future.

My Review:

Regency meets Sherlock Holmes with a macabre twist. How's that for a summation of this fresh, new Regency release? It has all the delicious elements of a great escape read.:

Innocent ingenue with a curiosity to rival any cat
Jaded ex-spy with a mysterious past
Horrific crime to solve
Burgeoning romance in the midst of peril
Social justice issues that appall as well as make you think
Solid inspirational thread

Kent does justice to the Regency era. Her dialogue is oh-so-annoyingly proper (in a good way) and I found myself beginning to think in 'Regencese' as I immersed myself in the read. :-) With her lush settings, vibrant characters and innumerable historical details the author has managed to create a bygone era that will send Regency lovers into a swoon.

The gallant Lord Witt has his hands full with Victoria, who seems to catapult herself from one impossible situation to another. And oh, her marvelous dog! A mastiff in the city no less! . He provides wonderful moments of comic relief in the midst of drama and intrigue.

This is the second in the Ravensmoore series, but easy to read as a standalone. However, I'm hooked and will be hunting down the first book which features Victoria's brother and sister-in-law (who are secondary characters in Chameleon).

A rollicking fun read for any historical romance lover!
