To Whisper Her Name

GIVEAWAY

ALEXANDER, TAMERA
TO WHISPER HER NAME

Olivia Aberdeen, destitute widow of a murdered carpetbagger, gratefully accepts an invitation from “Aunt” Elizabeth Harding, mistress of Belle Meade Plantation and the dearest friend of Olivia’s late mother. Expecting to be the Harding’s housekeeper, Olivia is disillusioned once again when she learns the real reason why Elizabeth’s husband, Confederate General William Giles Harding, agreed to her coming. Caring for an ill Aunt Elizabeth, Olivia is caught off guard by her feelings for Ridley Adam Cooper, a southern-born son who---unbeknownst to her and everyone else---fought for the Union.

Determined to learn “the gift” that Belle Meade’s head horse trainer, Bob Green, possesses, Ridley is a man desperate to end the war still raging inside him while harboring secrets that threaten his life. As Ridley seeks to make peace within himself for “betraying” the South he loved, Olivia is determined to never be betrayed again…

Set within the remarkable history of Nashville’s historic Belle Meade Plantation, comes a story about enslavement and freedom, arrogance and humility, and the power of love to heal even the deepest of wounds.

My Review:

A sweeping saga that packs an emotional punch and makes you think. What a winning combination! Loved the rich history that Alexander so carefully details -- and not just with facts but with feeling as well. I felt each character's struggle, my emotions ranging from horror to euphoria time and time again.

Both hero and heroine are sympathetic characters with complicated lives in a complicated time. The author brings a richness and depth to the story with intricate layers that buried me beneath the pages. A substantial 473 pages, To Whisper Her Name still wasn't long enough for me!

Beauty in Disguise

GIVEAWAY

MOORE, MARY
BEAUTY IN DISGUISE

After her scandalous first Season, Lady Kathryn needs a new beginning. Concealing her stunning hair and sapphire eyes beneath a dowdy facade, she's grateful to earn her keep as companion Kate Montgomery. Until she comes face-to-face with her past in Lord Dalton, the only man she has ever loved.

The debutante Dalton fell in love with years ago was beautiful beyond compare. The gentle, mysterious young woman he encounters at a country house has qualities he now values more highly—until he learns of her deception. Kate has broken his heart not once, but twice. Can faith help him see that love, like true beauty, always comes to light?

My Review:

Sheer delight doesn't begin to describe the thrill I felt as I devoured this Regency romance. Moore has an uncanny ability to capture the essence of the period in minute detail.  I felt like I'd been dropped into Regency England and I didn't want to get out!

Masterful pacing keeps this read a real page-turner. In fact it is so well done that I often had to pause just for the luxury of imagining my own conclusion to a scene. There's nothing like scene savoring to send this reader into a euphoric tailspin!

Beauty in Disguise is a must read for Regency lovers everywhere!

The General's Secretary

GIVEAWAY

GIUSTI, DEBBY
THE GENERAL'S SECRETARY

Lillie Beaumont's dark past has just turned up on her porch—fatally wounded. The dying words of the man imprisoned for killing Lillie's mother suggest hidden secrets. Criminal Investigations Division special agent Dawson Timmons agrees. He has his own motive for seeking the truth, and it gives Lillie every reason to doubt him. But even as they reluctantly begin to face painful secrets together, Dawson fears that a murderer is waiting to strike again. And this time, Lillie is right in the line of fire.…

My Review:

Giusti had my attention right from the emotionally charged opening. My heart was hammering right along with Lillie's and I don't think my pulse slowed down between the suspense and swooning over Dawson Timmons during the whole read!

Loved the dynamics between the hero and heroine. Both have issues from childhood which play a huge role in how they perceive themselves. I found this aspect so true to life and very relatable.

And the suspense -- superb! I only partially figured it out so I guess I won't quit my day job to become a detective just yet! If you love romantic suspense, The General's Secretary should definitely be in your TBR pile.

An Amish Kitchen

GIVEAWAY

LONG, KELLY
CLIPSTON, AMY
WISEMAN, BETH
AN AMISH KITCHEN

The Amish Kitchen is the Heart of the Home – and the Ideal Setting for Stories of Love and Hope.
Fall in Paradise, Pennsylvania always brings a brisk change in the weather. This time also provides unexpected visitors, new love, and renewed hope for three women.

Fern has a green thumb for healing herbs and flowers, but longs for love to bloom in her life. The next-door neighbor’s oldest son Abram comes running into Fern’s kitchen seeking help for his little sister. The crisis soon leads to a promise of romance—until an incident threatens to end their growing attraction.

Nearby, Hannah runs her parents’ bed and breakfast, Paradise Inn—but her life feels nothing like Paradise. She longs for a man of integrity to enter her life, but never expected him to knock on the front door looking for a room. Will she be able trust Stephen with her future once she discovers his mysterious past?

When a storm blows a tree onto Eve’s farmhouse, she has little choice but to temporarily move her family into her parents’ home. Outside of cooking together in the kitchen, Eve and her mother can’t agree on anything. But this may be just the recipe for hope in healing old wounds.

Three Amish stories—each celebrating love, family, and faith—all taking place in a tight-knit community where the kitchen truly is the heart of the home.

My Review:

A stellar lineup of authors creates a memorable read for Amish fans. Each story expertly weaves love and romance within a riveting, tightly-woven plot that delivers excellence right down to the very last word. These authors compliment each other beautifully. I love the common thread of the kitchen being the heart of the home and the way each story has pursued that idea in such a different way. This is a brilliant read with the added bonus of multiple Amish recipes at the end.

A Horseman's Hope

GIVEAWAY

JOHNSON, MYRA
A HORSEMAN'S HOPE

Grace Lorimer is too busy for a relationship...

And love is definitely out of the question while she works her way through college to earn her occupational therapist certification. Besides, her mother's string of failed relationships and broken promises proves romance is not worth risking her heart -- even when she begins to care deeply for single dad Ryan O'Keefe.

Four years after his girlfriend, Shana, became pregnant, Ryan still can't believe he's a father...and can't believe being anything else. His daughter is the light of his life. Now if only Shana could embrace motherhood and the three could become a real family...

Then Ryan receives shocking news about Shana, a his world is torn apart as he faces losing his daughter. Suddenly old feelings for Grace resurface, but is a whirwind marriage of convenience the answer?

My Review:

The third book in a series centering on a therapy horse ranch, Johnson had me riveted from the get go. A Horseman's Hope reads well as a standalone but will make for a richer read if you are familiar with the characters from A Horseman's Heart and A Horseman's Gift.

Ryan's devotion to his daughter is incredibly appealing from the very first page. And little Christina transforms every scene she is in. The two-person O'Keefe clan is a force to be reckoned with, which is lucky since Johnson throws plenty of plot angst at them.

I loved the easy-going friendship between Grace and Ryan that's hovering on the edge of so much more. This is where the author really excels -- drawing emotion out of her characters and directly into her readers. Their story tugged at my heartstrings right to the joyful end.

Candlelight Christmas

GIVEAWAY

CONNEALY, MARY
GOODNIGHT, LINDA
CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS

Two Inspirational Christmas Stories ...

1. The Outlaw’s Gift by Linda Goodnight

1880s Oklahoma Territory
When drifter Seth Blackstone shows up at Raven Patterson’s homestead, Raven thinks this may be the solution to all her problems. But Seth’s mysterious past is about to catch up with him and could mean disaster for them both.

2. The Christmas Candle by Mary Connealy

Arkansas Ozarks 1883
Gabe Wagner, has left his hectic city life and moved onto Rose Palmer’s mountain. His plans to build a house will tear the heart out of her Ozark Mountain home. Rose learns that what she calls peace and quiet has evolved into isolation and loneliness. As Christmas approaches and she searches for the perfect way to honor the Savior’s birth, she realizes she wants to let Gabe into her life. But to do it, she may have to face a larger world that frightens her while she gives up the safe life she has always known.

Can the search for the perfect Christmas candle and the broken hearts of two little boys bring a solitary woman and a grieving man together?

My Review:

These two delightful novellas will definitely put the most hardened Scrooge into the Christmas spirit. Linda Goodnight is a new-to-me-author and after reading The Outlaws Gift, I'll have to remedy that! A tender romance with a stubborn heroine always grabs my attention. And Seth's battles with his past have hardened him almost beyond redemption. Thankfully Goodnight has a Christmas miracle up her sleeve for the powerful conclusion.

Connealy fans will be surprised to find that not a shot was fired in this touching Christmas story. But that doesn't mean that action doesn't explode off the page in any number of pager-turning ways! Loved Gabe's earnest (but clueless) drive to reach his sons and Rose is the captivating heroine who brings him to his knees. Loved the whole imagery of Rose's candlemaking as she definitely becomes a light in the Wagner household.

Please note: ebook format only.

A Change of Fortune

GIVEAWAY

TURANO, JEN
A CHANGE OF FORTUNE

Lady Eliza Sumner is on a mission. After losing her family, her fiance, and her faith, the disappearance of her fortune is the last straw. Now, masquerading as Miss Eliza Sumner, governess-at-large, she's determined to find the man who ran off with her fortune, reclaim the money, and head straight back to London.

Much to Mr. Hamilton Beckett's chagrin, all the eyes of New York society--all the female ones, at least--are on him. Unfortunately for all the matchmaking mothers and eligible daughters, he has no plans to marry again, especially with his hands full keeping his business afloat and raising his two children alone.

When Eliza's hapless attempts to regain her fortune put her right in Hamilton's path, sparks instantly begin to fly. The discovery of a common nemesis causes them to join forces, but with all their plans falling by the wayside and their enemies getting the better of them, it will take a riot of complications for Hamilton and Eliza to realize that God just might have had a better plan in mind all along.

My Review:

This light-hearted, comedic romp by debut author Jen Turano will keep you grinning to the very end. The fast-paced plot doesn't give the reader a second to catch her breath though I felt that some of the scenes sped by too quickly. I would have liked to savor a little bit more.

Loved the spunky heroine and her erstwhile hero. There's great interaction between all the characters. Again, fast-paced dialogue keeps things hopping. The romance is light and compliments the overall style of the story. There has been some criticism of this book not being a serious historical and I agree, it's not. It doesn't need to be. A Change of Fortune is a campy, tongue-in-cheek escape read that's a whole lot of fun.

The Breath of Dawn

GIVEAWAY

HEIZTMANN, KRISTEN
THE BREATH OF DAWN

Corporate turnaround specialist Morgan Spencer, dubbed the "success guru," has a Midas touch in business. But losing his wife sent him to the brink, and his two-year-old daughter, Livie, is all he's living for--until they encounter a woman whose trouble just might draw him out of his own.

Four years ago Quinn Reilly did the right thing. Now the man her testimony put in jail is getting out. Though she has put up barriers to protect herself and those around her, she has come to care for the Spencer family, especially the winsome Livie and her mercurial father. Unwilling to put them at risk when the threats begin, she requests something she hopes the super-successful Morgan might be able to deliver.

Fixing problems is what Morgan does best, but his counterproposal takes them in a direction neither is equipped to handle. Determined to confront the past, will they survive to build a future?

My Review:

Complex. Multi-layered. Consuming. I've been wrestling with finding the right words to convey the power and depth of this story for hours. Characters became family and danger became personal.  What a riveting read! I'd have tons to say at a book club meeting but am hesitating here because I don't want to post any spoilers.

One of the things that struck me the most is the incredible characterization. Heitzmann has thought each one through from motive to reaction and on to redemption. Amazing. This reads real.

The suspense is drawn out with expert care. There are scenes I knew were significant early on in the book but I didn't know how they would play out in the full spectrum of things. Thankfully Heitzmann did...and I just have to say 'amazing' again!

If you like depth and spirit paired with romance and hope mixed up in an incredibly suspenseful plot, you are going to love The Breath of Dawn!

A Flight of Fancy

GIVEAWAY

EAKES, LAURIE ALICE
A FLIGHT OF FANCY

Her head is in the clouds. His feet are planted firmly on the ground. Can love cover the distance?

Cassandra Bainbridge may be a bit of a bluestocking, but when Geoffrey Giles is near, love seems a fine alternative to passion for Greek and the physics of flight. With his dashing good looks and undying devotion to her, the Earl of Whittaker sets Cassandra’s heart racing with his very presence. It seems his only flaw is his distaste for ballooning, the obsession that consumes so much of her thoughts.

When a terrible accident compels her to end her betrothal, Cassandra heads for the country to recover from both her injuries and her broken heart. With time on her hands and good friends to help her, she pursues her love for ballooning and envisions a future for herself as a daring aeronaut. But when Lord Whittaker slips back into her life, she finds her heart torn between her love for flight and her abiding love for the man she fears will no longer want her once he knows of her hidden scars.

My Review:

A delicious Regency Romance wrapped up in suspense. What more could a reader ask for? That it be written by Laurie Alice Eakes, of course! A divine read with so many captivating plots and subplots. Not to mention the characters...and an epic complicated love story.

Eakes' words have the ability to transport me through time. I love how she brings the Regency period to life. A Fight of Fancy is seeped in history but not weighted down by it and it was easy to get lost within its pages. I love that kind of escape read.

The second in The Daughters of Bainbridge House series, you don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one -- but if you did read A Necessary Deception, you will already be acquainted with Cassandra and her renegade ways. Feisty and daring, but still every inch the lady, Cassandra makes an endearing if frustrating heroine to Geoffrey's hero. Both share an impetuous and passionate nature but are at odds with so many other things in their lives that it's a wonder Eakes managed to get them together at all! Throw in all the intrigue and mystery and the result is a riveting read you won't want to put down.

Courting Cate

GIVEAWAY

GOULD, LESLIE
COURTING CATE

When This Couple Gets to Courting, Sparks Will Fly!

In Paradise, Pennsylvania, Cate Miller is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Her sweet and flirty sister, Betsy, on the other hand, seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County!

But the sisters' wealthy father has made one hard-and-fast rule: older Cate must marry first, before younger Betsy can even start courting. Unfortunately, untamable Cate has driven away every suitor--until Pete Treger comes to town, that is.

Prodded by the men of the area, Pete turns his attention to winning Cate's hand. But is his interest true or is there a scheme at play?
My Review:

It's no secret that I love Amish fiction and I really love it it when an author makes that genre her own, which is exactly what Gould has done in Courting Cate. It's a simple love story really -- if you dig past all the complications and emotional angst, that is. :-) But the story also has a unique perspective that I haven't read in any other Amish romance before. That made for a refreshing read, though I'm hard-pressed to explain the different nuances in the story that made it so.

Loosely based on Shakespeare's, A Taming of a Shrew, Gould digs deep beneath the surface of her characters so we understand their actions and reactions. I 'got' Cate's prickly ways and sometimes championed them and while Pete could be unerringly sweet, he was also annoyingly taciturn at times. The way Gould brings these two together makes for a brilliant, emotional read.

Against the Tide

GIVEAWAY

CAMDEN, ELIZABETH
AGAINST THE TIDE

After a childhood rampant with uncertainty, Lydia Pallas has carved out a perfect life for herself. She spends her days within sight of the bustling Boston Harbor, where her skill with languages has landed her an enviable position as a translator for the U.S. Navy.

Lydia's talents bring her to the attention of Alexander Banebridge, a mysterious man in need of a translator. Driven by a campaign to end the opium trade, Bane is coolly analytical and relentless in his quest. He cannot afford to fall for Lydia and must fight the bittersweet love growing between them.

When Bane's enemies gain the upper hand, he is forced to turn to Lydia for help. Determined to prove her worth, Lydia soon discovers that carrying out Bane's mission will test her wits and her courage to the very limits.

My Review:

What a gut-wrenching story! My tummy is still in a twist after my marathon read! Compelling doesn't begin to describe Camden's work. She has a knack for creating very real characters -- flaws and all -- that are easy for a reader to fall in love with. When Lydia hurt, I hurt. When Lydia cried, I cried. I felt like I was underneath her skin and could understand every nuance and reaction in every scene. That emotional pull made even more of an impact because as a reader, I could also see into the heart and mind of the hero, Bane. And what a complex character he is too! A self-made man, much too hard on himself with a grim determination to right the wrongs in his past. He is driven. But then so is Lydia in a different way -- both striving to escape their pasts for different reasons which makes for an interesting parallel.

Camden tackles historical detail with unerring precision. I was riveted by historical facts I wasn't  aware of. Yet another way that women and children were victimized in the 19th century. Appalled, doesn't begin to describe my reactions at times. The author tells an important story that could easily translate into issues and concerns we face in the 21st century.

There are wonderful lighthearted moments as well. Lydia's snappy comebacks and the way she holds her own with Bane always brought a smile to my lips. And his subtle teasing to ruffle her feathers are so much fun. There is a dynamic connection between the two that Camden builds into an unforgettable romance.

A stunning read for historical lovers everywhere.
