The Lacemaker

GIVEAWAY
FRANTZ, LAURA
THE LACEMAKER

It is the eve of a new age of freedom in the colonies. But can a proper English lady dare hope for her own independence?

Lady Elizabeth "Liberty" Lawson has nearly everything a lady of her position could want. Daughter of the British lieutenant governor of the Virginia Colony and a darling of fine society in a rugged land, she is anticipating an advantageous marriage. That her betrothed is a rake and a love is lacking is of little consequence - or so she tells herself.

Though her own life seems in order, colonial Williamsburg is a powder keg on the verge of exploding, and her fiance's cousin Noble Rynallt carries the flame of revolution in his heart. Those with connections the the British nobility are suspected as spies, and Liberty soon finds herself left with a terrible choice. Will she stay true to her English roots? Or side with Noble and the radical revolutionaries?

My Review:

Oh, let's just cut to the chase and start with the hero since I'm that twitterpated over Noble. Fainting couches, fans, smelling salts - a full stock of swoon recovery items are a definite necessity before embarking on this historical romance. Because Noble is one of the most romantical heroes I've ever encountered in fiction. And he really does live up to his name. Patriotic. Idealistic. Decent and kind. A man who doesn't take faith for granted. A true gentleman back in the day when that actually meant something! I could go on but I'm in danger of melting into a puddle as I relive those exquisite moments of Noble murmuring Welsh endearments in my...er Liberty's...ear. Thud - and pass the smelling salts please.

Then there's Liberty -- on the verge of entering into a loveless marriage, ever her father's obedient pawn. A sleeping beauty in need of awakening. Love the parallels between her personal quest for independence set against the backdrop of a nation's quest for freedom.

Frantz blends fact and fiction into a vibrant story that brings history to life. Real life heroes take their place on the page next to fictional ones as she delivers a rich, multi-layered tale of faith and freedom.

Leah's Choice

GIVEAWAY
PERRY, MARTA
LEAH'S CHOICE

In the Amish community of Pleasant Valley, a teacher must rely on her faith to guide her heart through challenging times.

All of Pleasant Valley seems to thinks the newcomer from Lancaster County is the perfect match for schoolteacher Leah Beiler. After all, so few new families come to their secluded Amish community, and even fewer unmarried men. Daniel Glick is a widower with three young children to look after -- clearly he's in need of a wife.

But Daniel's past haunts him at every turn. Though he cannot miss the beauty in Leah's bright eyes and patient ways, he also sees a reminder of the pain he came so far to escape. Leah, too, has a burden on her heart. Years ago she was engaged to Johnny Kile and was heartbroken when he decided to leave the Amish community. Since then she has immersed herself in her love of the children she teaches, forgetting any hopes of having her own family.

When Johnny returns, seeking reconciliation, Leah must decide between two pathways, either of which will change her life forever...

My Review:

first published in 2009 and reissued in mass market paperback format this year.
My thanks to my public library for keeping me in retro reads!

I've read a couple of books in the Pleasant Valley series and am happily backtracking to catch up on the ones I've missed. Leah's Choice is the first book in the series and Marta Perry has created such an enthralling Amish community! I love the way she includes so many fascinating details about the culture and the people, including Pennsylvania Dutch words and phrases. It's easy to grasp their meaning in context, but a glossary is included at the end of the book as well.

Leah has found her calling in the schoolroom. She is steadfast in her faith and her future until she's unexpectedly challenged by two very different men. Widower Daniel has moved into the community to give his traumatized children a fresh start but he has mixed feelings when Teacher Leah shows a special interest in Matthew, Elizabeth and Jonah. She sees needs in his kinner that he doesn't want to acknowledge. Lots of emotional undercurrents bring an edge to their developing romance as Daniel harbors secrets under the false assumption that he can handle it all. If that isn't enough angst, Leah is confronted with the return of her first love, Johnny Kile (who I wanted to purse whomp on more than one occasion!)

A powerful story that explores the deeply rooted need to belong -- a theme that plays out in various ways in the lives of different characters. The kind of story that captivates a reader right to the soul stirring end.

The Rancher Inherits a Family

GIVEAWAY
ST. JOHN, CHERYL
THE RANCHER INHERITS A FAMILY

Unexpected Father...

The pretty redhead Seth Halloway pulls from a derailed train has surprising news for him. The children she's accompanied to Cowboy Creek aren't heres -- they're his, thanks to the last wishes of a late friend. Busy rancher Seth must suddenly cope with three rambunctious boys...and try to ignore his growing feelings for independent Marigold Brewster.

Marigold hopes to start over as the town's new schoolteacher. She'll choose her own path, and stay aloof from the adorable Radner boys -- and their guardian. But the man who rescued her from a wrecked railcar might ust be the one to save her from loneliness...if she dares to let him in.

My Review:

I can't believe this is my first visit to Cowboy Creek! Clearly I have been missing out on a lot! Love this growing town and the way they draw together to become a community of faith and grace. What a great backdrop for a cowboy romance...speaking of which...Seth Halloway! If you made a list of all the swoonworthy characteristics we all love in a Western wrangler you could put his name in as the definition. Including being endearingly awkward in the wooing department. And intensely stubborn when it comes to sharing his feelings...or even acknowledging them.

Mind you, Marigold isn't much better. Still reeling from a series of losses, she's determined to make a life for herself on her own -- pouring her love into her young scholars instead of seeking romance and a family of her own. But that's before three little rapscallions get under her skin and their quietly steadfast guardian opens his home....and heart.

A heartwarming love story that celebrates the miracle that comes from creating a new family out of unspeakable loss and heartache.

Troubled Waters

GIVEAWAY

WARREN, SUSAN MAY
TROUBLED WATERS

With their past tearing them apart, it will take a storm to bring them together...

Billionaire Ian Shaw can have everything he wants -- except a happy ending. Or at least that's what it feels like with his fortune recently liquidated, his niece missing, and the woman he loves refusing to speak to him. Despite her love for Ian, Sierra Rose knows he has no room in his life for her as long as the mystery of his missing niece goes unsolved. Sierra has solved it, but a promise to the girl to keep her whereabouts secret has made it impossible to be around Ian.

When Sierra needs funds to repair the damaged PEAK chopper, Ian offers a fundraising junket for large donors on his yacht in the Caribbean. But the leisurely excursion turns into a nightmare when a rogue wave cripples the yacht and Ian and Sierra find themselves washed up on a strange, empty shore.

It will take guts for the PEAK team to rescue the duo. But it will take a miracle to rescue Ian and Sierra's relationship.

My Review:

"I recognize that look. Defeat. Broken and at the end of yourself." (p 321) That perfectly describes me all through this book! Bwahahaha! Seriously tummy-tied-in-pretzel-knots emotional angst of a read. Warren put this romance-loving reader through her paces with not one but two heart-crushing love stories.

And once again I'm left clamoring for more when it comes to Jess and Pete. Honestly, those two are killing me!!! This might be a good place to recommend reading the Montana Rescue books in order since relationships carry over from one book to the next. You could read Troubled Waters as a standalone, but you will feel ever excruciating nuance more if you've been following the team from the very beginning. :-)

So, back to Pete and Jess who have been dancing around each other forever (or so it seems) and they did make some toe-curling, fainting couch swoonworthy progress...until Warren slammed them with harsh reality. Sigh. It shouldn't bother me so much, I know. They are only fictional characters --oh, who am I kidding? There is no 'only' when it comes to the people this author brings to life in her books. And it looks like Pete and Jess (and me) will have to wait a while longer to get our happily ever after. Sigh.

But I can be okay with that (somewhat) because Ian and Sierra finally wrangle their way back to each other. Oy. My heart hurt soooooo much for them! Sierra, bound by an impossible sense of honor and loving Ian so completely and deeply for so long. She wears her heart on her sleeve and is so openly vulnerable that everyone notices...except Ian. Gah! He's his own worst enemy. Compulsively organizing everything because he needs to be in control. All the time. He has to learn to let go and find God before any of us have a hope of healing Sierra's broken heart.

Once again Susan May Warren dazzles with intense, faith-fueled and action-packed romance.

Mission to Protect

GIVEAWAY
REED, TERRI
MISSION TO PROTECT

Enter the world of the Military K-9 Unit
A riveting new series begins!

When the Red Rose Killer leaves his calling card for Staff Sergeant Felicity Monroe, she knows exactly what that means -- she's on his revenge list. Her boss, Master Sergeant Westley James and K-9 German shepherd Dakota become her guardians, but they'll have to act fast to escape the man who wants her dead.

My Review:

Woohoo! I'm super excited about this new Love Inspired Suspense continuity series! Six great authors working their suspense magic on one over-arcing plot while delivering an edge-of-your-seat suspense unique to each book. And the best part is there's a book every month so we don't have long to wait between reads.

Terri Reed sets it all up beautifully in Mission to Protect with murder and mayhem from the very first page. Nothing like an escaped serial killer on a rampage to get a reader's blood pressure up. But there's something else sinister going on here too. Something creepy stalkerish and Felicity is caught in the cross-hairs.

That doesn't sit well with Westley and not just because he feels responsible for Felicity because she's under his command. That right there is the problem due to the Air Force's non-fraternization policy. Both their careers will be in jeopardy if Westley can't get a hold of some confusing emotions. So he is gnarly and terse and overly stoic in all his interactions with Felicity. Which should settle the matter except... "He didn't understand it. Not liking her should have been easy. She was annoyingly optimistic and bubbly." (p 30) Bwhahaha! I just adore a hero confused by love.

An impossible romance paired with two hair-raising suspense threads make this a real page-turner of a read.

In Places Hidden

GIVEAWAY

PETERSON, TRACIE

IN PLACES HIDDEN

The search for her missing brother leads to the most dangerous part of the city...

Camrianne Coulter's brother Caleb is a successful San Francisco attorney. But when three months go by without a word from the usually communicative Caleb, Camri boards a train to the booming West Coast city to find out for herself why he hasn't written. When she arrives at his home, nobody seems to know where he is...or what has become of him.

Camri's search for her brother leads her deep into the political corruption of the city -- and into the acquaintance of Patrick Murdock, who Caleb successfully defended from a false murder charge. Getting to know this handsome Irish contractor challenges all of Camri's privileged beliefs, but Patrick is unshakably loyal to her brother, and he seems to know more about what happened to Caleb than anyone else.

As the two edge closer to the truth behind Caleb's disappearance, they risk angering the powerful forces that control the city. Can Camri trust Patric to protect her from the dangers that lie hidden in San Francisco's backstreets?

My Review:

While I found In Places Hidden an enjoyable read, there were some elements of the story that kept me at arms length so this is going to be a bit of a mixed-bag review.

Love the setting -- San Francisco, 1905 which is just a year before the famous earthquake and subsequent fires that claimed so many lives and destroyed 80 % of the city. And since this is the first book in a series it looks like Camri and company are in for some challenging times ahead.

And I love that Camri is an unorthodox heroine. An educated college teacher and an ardent suffragette, it's no surprise that she travels across the country to search for her missing brother. But though she is God-fearing, she's also proud and opinionated and quick to dismiss others concerns as less than her own. And she doesn't have a filter -- she just bursts out with what she's thinking in a superior, "I'm highly educated and you are not" kind of way. It grated on me after awhile because  though Camri recognizes what she is doing, she doesn't stop. There is some growth towards the end of the book but it was a long row to hoe before we got there.

Camri befriends two young women on the journey to San Francisco and this is as much their story as hers. Both Judith and Kenzie have their own problems and the three friends commit to pooling their resources to help each other out. Peterson sets out their backstories and challenges in preparation for future novels in the series -- In Dreams Forgotten releases in July 2018 and In Times Gone By releases in September 2018 -- so it's neat that these books are being released so close together as there are carry over plot elements that left me on tenterhooks at the end of this one.

Irish American Patrick Murdock is a gem of a hero. Fiercely loyal, dedicated to his sister and restoring his family's name and business...and just as determined to discover what happened to Camri's brother. In some ways these two are exact opposites. Camri -- refined and educated. Patrick -- self-taught and rough around the edges. But they share a deep-rooted stubbornness and love of family. There's definitely clashing of wills and gnashing of teeth at times on their rocky road to romance!

I don't know if it was just me going into this read assuming it was a suspense, but the mystery around Caleb's disappearance is where things fell apart for me. It seems to be the central theme when you read the synopsis and it's what drives Camri across the country. However, once she arrives in San Francisco, I found her search to be rather passive. She makes some overtures but seems content to let various men look into the matter for her which is contrary to her suffragette woman-are-equal-to-men beliefs. And there are major parts of the plot that take place 'off page' and are related in dialogue later which was anticlimactic for me.

While I did find In Places Hidden (great title tie-in, by the way) a compelling read, it felt more like I was hearing about the events instead of living them -- if that makes any sense. I just wasn't as emotionally engaged as I usually am in a story.

Beneath the Surface

GIVEAWAY
BLACKBURN, LYNN H.
BENEATH THE SURFACE

She thought she'd be safe when she moved back home. She was dead wrong.

After a harrowing experience with an obsessed patient, oncology nurse practitioner Leigh Weston needed a change. She thought she'd left her troubles behind when she moved home to Carrington, North Carolina and took a job in the emergency department of the local hospital. But when someone tampers with her brakes, she fears the past has chased her down and reaches out to her high school friend turned homicide investigator, Ryan Parker, for help.

Ryan finds satisfaction in his career, but his favorite way to use his skills is as a volunteer underwater investigator with the Carrington County Sheriff's Office dive team. When the body of a wealthy businessman is discovered in Lake Porter, the investigation uncovers a possible serial killer -- one with a terrifying connection to Leigh Weston and deadly implications for them all.

My Review:

Eep! Squeal!! Thud!!! I'm in a discombobulated frenzy of excitement over this new series by Lynn H. Blackburn. Not only am I smitten by Beneath the Surface, but I'm all aflutter just contemplating the future Dive Team Investigations books! That's because Blackburn has done an incredible job of introducing team members with unique personalities that already have me clamoring for answers. Like what's up with Gabe and Anissa?! Inquiring reader minds want to know, Ms. Blackburn!

There is so much to love about this book but I'll get the one big negative out of the way first before I start waxing poetic. Ready? The worst thing about this romantic suspense is that the pages run out! Like, seriously, I'm blissfully reading along alternately swooning and cringing and occasionally shoulder-checking when -- snap -- just like that, it's over. Way too soon, even if the ending is all toe-curling sweetness. Insert disgruntled sigh here (heavy enough to cause my bangs to stand up on end.).

At least the author leaves us with a glimpse into what's coming up in In Too Deep which provides some consolation and not a small amount of anticipatory hyperventilating! If you love the kind of romantic suspense series written by Dani Pettrey, Lynette Eason and Irene Hannon, you are going to become a huge Lynn H. Blackburn fan!

So, the things I love about this book. The fact that Leigh is Chinese American because I am looking for diversity in my fiction. She's a spunky nurse with a huge heart for her patients. And she's been harboring a secret crush on Ryan since her brother used to bring him home in their high school days. That's a great foundation for building a realistic romance in the midst of danger and intrigue. Especially since Ryan was interested in Leigh way back then too!

And I love the way Blackburn balances the romance and the suspense with flashes of team camaraderie and humour. I soaked up every delicious word! And the dive team angle is a refreshing addition to this genre. This is the kind of story it's easy to get immersed in -- ha! no pun intended. A taut and  gripping pager-turner I found impossible to put down...even when I reached the end!

Avery Truitt aches for true love -- the kind she once shared with Prince Colin. Can she dare to hope for happily ever after, or is a fairy-tale ending beyond reach?

College volleyball star Avery Truitt has not seen her former flame, Prince Colin of Brighton Kingdom, since he suddenly pushed her away five years ago. But now, the sadness of losing her father and the joy of her sister Susanna's pregnancy have brought Avery back to Brighton just in time for Cathedral City's enchanting Christmas season.

Avery knows she can't avoid seeing Colin -- now the Kingdom's most eligible bachelor -- whether or not her heart is ready to relive the pain. But seeing him again might bring her the closure she needs after all this time.

When Colin finds himself at the center of a centuries -- old Brighton tradition, he must decide whether to follow the path laid out before him or follow his heart to the only woman for whom he would ring the Pembroke Chapel Bell.

Can Colin convince Avery to meet him at the chapel on Christmas morning -- as tradition dictates -- or will Avery run back to her St. Simons home and pursue a coaching career as planned?

My Review:

published in 2016 by Zondervan
My thanks to my public library for providing me with a copy of this delightful retro read!

Scrumptious holiday romance! This ticks all the boxes and put me in the holiday spirit...in April. Which is fine, really, since there's a major blizzard heading my way. If I'm getting the weather, I might as well enjoy the best part of winter, right? And that's Christmas reading!

A modern day fairy tale with a toe-curling prince who wrestles between duty and the heart! Blissful sigh. A snappy, scrappy Southern belle who hides a broken heart underneath all that moxie. Circumstances conspire along with a little divine assistance and Colin and Avery are faced with a second chance...if they're willing to take a leap of faith. Loved every exquisite second of this read.

Mountain Country Courtship

GIVEAWAY
KAYE, GLYNNA
MOUNTAIN COUNTRY COURTSHIP

His Hometown Romance

After being jilted at the altar, the last place Denny Hunter wants to be is in his hometown. Yet he's back in Hunter Ridge renovating a run-down old inn with the lovely Lillian Keene. He doesn't know she's a runaway bride - or that her niece has serious matchmaking plans. But in this Heart of Hunter Ridge book, Denny and Lillian discover that the most important restoration starts with the heart.

My Review

A contemporary romance that features a home reno theme? I'm totally in! And in love with this ramshackle inn that just needs a bit of TLC to make it shine again.

Lillian is trying to keep up with all the changes in her life. Caring for an ailing aunt, being substitute mum to her hurting niece and trying to keep the inn afloat so they all have a roof over their heads. Romance is the last thing on this runaway bride's mind.

There's something about a wounded hero that plays havoc with my romance-loving heart. Having lived through his parents' messy divorce as a young child, Denny has spent a lifetime looking for a place to belong. Over-achieving in a bid to meet his stepfather's approval, estranged from his biological father and his extended family...well, let's just say that navigating the rough waters of family dysfunction takes all of Denny's time and attention. Meaning he is just as adverse to romance as Lillian is.  These two clash from the get go but that's okay because this rough start romance is peppered with a mix of sass, angst and laughter. And a cute little matchmaker who has dreams of her own.

Isaiah's Daughter : a Novel of Prophets and Kings

GIVEAWAY
ANDREWS, MESU
ISAIAH'S DAUGHTER : A NOVEL OF PROPHETS AND KINGS

Whips cracked. Soldiers shouted. My feet blistered in a sunbaked wilderness. We kept walking. Walking. Walking...

The Hebrews are a divided nation. Israel in the north -- ten tribes strong -- has bowed to pagan worship. In Judah's two tribes, an evil king mocks King David's legacy while a remnant of Yahweh's faithful cling desperately to their one true God.

Caught in the middle of the warring is an orphaned girl named Ishma -- meaning 'desolation.' Her short life already mirrors the name.

Yet Yahweh's plan for her has only just begun.

Ishma enters the prophet Isaiah's home as a household servant, but her quick mind and lively spirit gain the friendship of Prince Hezekiah. When Isaiah sees their relationship mature, he adopts Ishma, giving her a royal pedigree and a new name. Ishma becomes Hephzibah -- 'delight of the Lord' -- and the desolate captive becomes Judah's queen.

But loving Hezekiah will require more of Hephzibah than she ever imagined. From Ahaz's terrifying reign to the Assyrian threat and Isaiah's own perplexing prophecies -- Zibah remains trapped by fear, facing an uncertain future. Will palace life lead to freedom from her past? Or can she trust everything to the only One who gives life and delivers both a captive heart and a desperate nation?

My Review:

In her Author's Notes, Mesu Andrews writes, "Because God's Holy Scriptures are His living Word, they have been fulfilled in many ways in many generations and will be fulfilled in ways yet to come." (p 384) That really struck me as profound. Especially when I think about the Old Testament because I've always struggled with...well, that eye for an eye mentality that was prevalent at that time. I'm guilty of dismissing it in favour of the the New Testament. But Andrews and other biblical fiction authors are bringing this part of my Christian history to life in a meaningful way.

Isiah's Daughter is a complex story that highlights the best -- and worst -- in God's chosen people. It's devastating and beautiful; heartbreaking and hopeful. A dramatic saga that's hard to read in places because Andrews doesn't shy away from the less savory aspects of  a brutal regime. Vivid imagery and deep characterization bring Isiah and his household to life. This author is a gifted storyteller with a reverent imagination that fictionalizes bible stories while staying true to the words of the prophets. A definite must read for biblical fiction fans or a great introduction to readers new to this genre.

My Review:

Wait...just...a...sec...gotta catch my breath. Phew! Oxygen tank definitely recommended for this breath-snatching read! Hard to believe this is Sharee Stover's debut novel! It's edge-of-your-seat goodness full of action and romance and some diabolical bad guys. Seriously creepy! And there are so many twists and turns. It's like Katie's been dropped down a rabbit hole with no end in sight. Just when I thought we'd landed at a breathing space...whoosh, all the air was sucked out of my lungs. Again.
