384848914179865638900864

Which brings me to some changes coming up in 2019. I'll do reviews/giveaways Monday thru Friday and post winners on Saturday. Sundays will be a kind of free-for-all. It might be a day of rest or used to review a non-fiction book or movie (which I get offers to review from time to time and usually turn down and feel guilty afterwards!) Or I might review a squeaky clean cozy mystery or a Christian fiction title that I've discovered at my library but is no longer available to buy. So Sundays will be a come-what-may kind of end (or beginning) to the week which may or may not involve a giveaway. You'll know there's a giveaway if I post that multi-colored book image with the word GIVEAWAY underneath at the top of the review blog. Does that all sound confusing? Well, we'll soon get into the new groove and hopefully it will all make sense!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

The Prayer Box

GIVEAWAY
RANDOM RETRO READ DAY!

WINGATE, LISA
THE PRAYER BOX

When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola's rambling Victorian house. Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning Iola's youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper -- the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman, passing through the seasons of an extraordinary unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything for Tandi.

My Review:

published in 2013
My thanks to my public library for providing me with the audio version of this book.

I'm kinda gobsmacked right now, searching for words to express all my mixed emotions over this book. Stunned. Awestruck. Furious. Fuming. Melty-hearted. Goosebumped. Exasperated...you name it, I felt it as I immersed myself in this story.

Lisa Wingate has such an exquisite writing style. So beautifully descriptive that you feel like you are living every excruciating second along side the characters. And I think listening to the audio version enhanced my 'reading' experience. I especially loved Iola Anne's voice which we get through her written prayers.

And then there's Tandi. Oy. True confession -- I didn't like her for about half of the book! I almost couldn't continue with the story because I found her so unrelatable! But -- and here's where real writing talent comes in to play -- Wingate wooed me with her words and the way she slowly allows Tandi's backstory to unfold. I got to the point where I still didn't like the choices she was making but I could understand why she acted the way she did. And then I began to wonder what business I had judging her anyway. lol Nothing like a real-life lesson on grace in the middle of a novel!

Iola Anne's simple, heartfelt prayers are a kind of ethereal thread that binds this story together. That woman's simple faith worked a change in both Tandi and me! And there comes a point were past and present collide and -- whoosh -- amazing grace!

Romancing the Runaway Bride

GIVEAWAY
KIRST, KAREN
ROMANCING THE RUNAWAY BRIDE

Second-chance bride

Though she came west in her wedding dress, Deborah Frazier isn't looking for a groom. She fled St. Louis to excape marrying a man she didn't love. In Cowboy Creek, she's found shelter, friends and a job. All that's now in jeopardy, thanks to a handsome newcomer.

Undercover Pinkerton agent Adam Halloway is hunting for his family's greatest enemy. The pretty baker at the boardinghouse is certainly hiding something -- but is she an accomplice to a criminal? As evidence against Deborah piles up, can Adam trust his heart and make Deborah a bride at last?

My Review:

I do so love a mix of mystery in my historical romance and Kirst does a superb job of weaving both together in Romancing the Runaway Bride. And really, what's not to love about a runaway bride paired with a Pinkerton agent -- working undercover no less?! Oh, the delicious thrills that sent me into a reader tailspin as misunderstandings snowball and the romance grows gnarly right when the intrigue heats up! I wanted to bash poor Adam a time or two. That man knows how to hold a grudge and he's messed up his priorities for way too long....and continues the trend with Deborah! Gah! But he's so endearing in his vulnerability that my heart softened and I was rooting for him to get his man and his girl!!!!! Preferably without anyone getting shot, thank you very much. A read-in-one-gulp kind of book.

GIVEAWAY OPPORTUNITY:

If you would like a chance to win a copy of Second-Chance Bride, leave a comment below or email me at kavluvstoreadATyahooDOTca. If you add an email to your comment, remember to use AT and DOT instead of @ and . to protect yourself from spammers. If you enter the draw via email, please add the title to the subject line so it's easy to spot your entry. Draw will be held and winner announced on Sunday December 30, 2019. Auschwitz Lullaby

GIVEAWAY
ESCOBAR, MARIO
AUSCHWITZ  LULLABY

Available for the first time in English, Auschwitz Lullaby brings to live the story of Helene Hannemann - a woman who sacrificed everything for family and fought furiously for the children she hoped to save.

On an otherwise ordinary morning in 1943, Helene Hannemann is preparing her five children for the day when the German police arrive at her home. Helene's worst fears come true when the police, under strickt orders from the SS, demand that her children and her husband, all of Romani heritage, be taken into custody. Though Helene is German and safe from the forces invading her home, she refuses to leave her family -- sealing her fate in a way she never could have imagined.

After a terrifying trek across the continent, they arrive at Auschwitz and are thrown into the chaos of the camp. Her husband, Johann, is separated from them, but Helene remains fiercely protective of her children and those around her. When they discover that Helene is not only a German but also a trained nurse, she is forced into service at the camp hospital, which is overseen by the notorious Dr. Mengele himself.

Helene is under no illusions in terms of Dr. Mengele's intentions, but she agrees to cooperate when he asks her to organize a school for the Romani children at the camp. Though physically and emotionally brutalized by the conditions at Auschwitz, Helene musters the strength to protect the children in her care at any cost. Through sheer force of will, Helene provides a haven for the children of Auschwitz -- an act of kindness and selflessness so great that it illuminates the darkest night of human history.

Based on a true story, Mario Escobar's Auschwitz Lullaby demonstrates the power of sacrifice and the strength of human dignity -- even when all hope seems lost.

My Review:

"...as long as children can sing, the world still has a chance." (p 171)

The kind of read that pummels you from the inside out! Such an aching mix of emotions. Despair and hope and horror and awe and...just a jumble of everything in between. Made all the more potent because this is a true story.

Helene was a real heroine -- the epitome of motherly love who demonstrated incredible courage in the face of some of the greatest evil this world has ever known! Of Aryan birth, she isn't compelled to accompany her family to Auschwitz but she refuses to be separated from them, Even her most dire imaginings can't compare to the cruel realities of life in a concentration camp but Helene manages to bring a bit of light into the darkness that surrounds them all.

This is a story of contrasts. Good and evil. Love and hate. Life and death. Humanity stripped of everything humane. I'm appalled and uneasy and mesmerized by a tale that should be part of some grim fantasy novel rather than the the fictional memoirs of a woman who lived and loved during one of the most atrocious periods in history.

Heartbreak and exhilaration all wrapped up into one riveting read.

A Groom for Ruby / The Amish Witness

GIVEAWAY
MILLER, EMMA
BURKE, DIANE
A GROOM FOR RUBY/
THE AMISH WITNESS

Two Amish stories of faith and love

A Groom for Ruby by Emma Miller -- Arriving in Seven Poplars to find a husband, Ruby Plank stumbles into the arms of an eligible bachelor! To her amazement, Joseph Brenneman doesn't care if Ruby is clumsy or outspoken. The shy mason thinks she's wonderful. If only others felt the same! Joseph's mother insists Ruby isn't good enough. Where Ruby's family secret is revealed, it could divide the couple forever...unless pride gives way to love and trust.

The Amish Witness by Diane Burke -- After witnessing her best friend's murder, Elizabeth Lapp flees to the Amish community she left years ago. But the killer follows Elizabeth, trapping her in a barn, until Thomas King saves her. The handsome Amish farmer she left behind vows to keep her safe. Suddenly, the man who's not yet ready to forgive her is all that's standing between her and a cold-blooded killer.

My Review:

Both books were published in 2017 and then released together in this 2018 edition.
My thanks to my public library for providing me with this retro reader.

I have no idea how I missed these two Love Inspired novels the first time round but I think it's a nifty idea to pair a contemporary romance and a romantic suspense in this two books-in-one edition. A nice sampling of both authors.

A Groom for Ruby by Emma Miller is part of the her Amish Matchmaker series though it reads wunderbar as a standalone. I've read a number of books in this series and I adore Sarah, the wise and infinitely patient matchmaker. Such a neat perspective for a contemporary romance. Ruby and Joseph's courtship is funny and frustrating and completely endearing. She's a klutz (and I do so relate!!!) and he's a shy bachelor who gets tongue-tied around the fairer sex. And though I swooned over these two, I also wanted to rattle some sense into one secondary character. Gah!!!!  A lovely emotional mix that kept me happily riveted to the very end.

I love the mix of Amish and suspense that Diane Burke brings to The Amish Witness. I really liked the fact that both hero and heroine are Amish and most of the action occurs within the Amish community -- with a little help from law enforcement towards the end. Seven years ago, Elizabeth and Thomas were seriously courting until Elizabeth suddenly disappeared into the Englisch world, breaking Thomas's heart in the process. Burke gives lots of introspective page time to their past romance as they move towards reconciliation. I found Elizabeth's personal mystery as captivating as the actual suspense. An exciting page-turner with a distinct Amish flare.

Caught by Surprise

GIVEAWAY
TURANO, JEN
CAUGHT BY SURPRISE

After years of hiding her true nature, Miss Temperance Flowerdew is finally enjoying freedom outside of the shadow of her relations, so the last thing she expected on her way to work was to be grabbed off the street by a stranger and put on a train bound for Chicago.

When Mr. Gilbert Cavendish is called upon to rescue a missing woman, he follows the trail to Chicago only to discover that the woman is his good friend, Temperance. Before they can discover who was behind her abduction, they're spotted alone together by a New York society matron, putting their reputations at risk.

Even though Gilbert is willing to propose marriage, Temperance is dtermined not to lose her newfound independence. But when the misunderstanding in Chicago escalates into a threat on her life, accepting Gilbert's help in solving the mystery may lead to more than the she ever could have dreamed.

My Review:

Outrageously funny! Sometimes a reader just needs a touch of whimsy and chaos that she can laugh her way through and that's what Jen Turano delivers in Caught by Surprise. From the giggle inducing character names to Miss Snook's School for the Education of the Feminine Mind...I mean...if that doesn't have you snorting with glee, I don't know what will!

Sublime dialogue -- honestly, the banter between Temperance and Gilbert made me giddy. They grew up together so all that history brings familiarity but then suddenly they are forced to see each other in a different light and -- zing -- the toe-curling starts happening. Cue the euphoric chuckling because this is a Jen Turano novel and even the romance is infused with delicious comedy!

It starts with a bungled kidnapping and picks up from there. :-) From madcap mayhem straight to bedlam and I loved every blessed second!
