GIR DEFINED : GOD'S RADICAL DESIGN FOR BEAUTY, FEMININITY AND IDENTITY

What is God's design for women?

In a culture where airbrushed models and ultra-driven career women define beauty and success, it's no wonder we have a distorted view of femininity. Girl Defined offers a distinctly God-centered view of beauty, femininity, and self-worth. Based firmly in God's design for our lives, this book invites us on a liberating journey toward a radically better vision for femininity -- one that ends with the kind of hope, purpose, and fulfillment we've been yearning for.

My Review:

I don't think there has been a more confusing time to be a woman. For all our women's rights advancement, society is struggling with the key concepts of what femininity means...or doesn't mean! The authors have done a marvellous job of presenting fresh perspective and friendly encouragement as they tackle worldly concepts vs biblical ones.

While marketed for teens and young women, I think Girl Defined reaches a broader audience. No matter what our age it's hard to keep from becoming entrenched in society's ideal of womanhood. The popularity of all types of media has the potential to make women of all ages victims of their 'false advertising.' Baird and Clark begin their book with that identifiable moment in every girl's life where she recognizes the desire "to be beautiful and valued by the people around her." And I don't think we become immune to that desire as we age.

"Instead of turning to God's word first and allowing him to inform our worldview on gender, many of us do the opposite." ( p. 67)

The authors present compelling points in an engaging manner and then turn it over to the reader with challenges to pray about issues in their own lives.  Each chapter's study guide asks a few pointed questions to help the reader make an honest assessment. The key is to be true to yourself as you ponder and pray over each one. I love the way the authors encourage girls (and women) to take charge instead of allowing the world to define them.
