Deadlock

GIVEAWAY

MILLS, DIANN
DEADLOCK

Two murders have rocked the city of Houston. Are they the work of a serial killer, or is a copycat trying to get away with murder?

That is the question facing Special Agent Bethany Sanchez, who is eager for her new assignment in violent crimes but anxious about meeting her new partner. Special Agent Thatcher Graves once arrested her brother, and he has a reputation for being a maverick. Plus, their investigative styles couldn’t be more opposite: he operates on instinct, while she goes by the book.

When hot leads soon fizzle out, their differences threaten to leave them deadlocked. But an attempt on their lives turns up the heat and brings them closer together, and a third victim might yield the clue that will help them zero in on a killer. This could be the case of their careers . . . if they can survive long enough to solve it.

My Review:

Jaw-dropping good. I mean seriously, I read it in one sitting. I think my house could have caught fire and I wouldn't have noticed. So, beware, you might want to clear your calendar and place small children into the hands of responsible caregivers before you start reading this one. It's that compulsive of a read.

The suspense is riveting. Intricate and complicated -- but not in a way that leaves a reader lost. Intense action. Plenty of pieces to try to put together. And the way Mills weaves seemingly diverse threads together is masterful. I just could not stop reading.

I love that the book starts on the first day Bethany and Thatcher are paired up as partners. Destined to clash since the way they work a case is very different. In fact, they are polar opposites in many ways. Thatcher sums it up pretty well at their first charged meeting, "We could fail or become a dynamite team." (p 5) Their romance is just as complicated as the suspense and all the more rewarding as a result.

A Velcro book -- you won't be able to shake it loose until you read that final glorious page.

  1. I have heard of DiAnn Mills books forever! Anyone who is a voracious reader has, so why have I not ever read one of her books? Have you ever read an author's book for the first time and asked, "where have you been all my life?!" knowing they have been there for years! LOL Very well written, intriguing review. Thanks, Kav.

    1. LOL -- comes from a term we have in my family regarding shelties -- we call them Velcro dogs because they stick with you even if it's just going from one room to the next. I guess they feel the need to herd their humans in the right direction and keep them out of trouble. :-) Certain books have the same (annoying?) habit.

  9. Except for the handsome man on the cover, at first glance this book didn't really appeal to me. After reading your review, I'm convinced Deadlock is a book I'd enjoy reading. Thanks for the recommendation.

  15. Another series I haven't read before the third book comes out. There are so many great authors in this particular sub-genre - Mills, Bradley, Henderson. It's so hard to read them all! I have been drawn to this novel more than the others in the series. Do they stand alone well? tlhcoupon(at)Hotmail(dot)com

    1. Definitely stand alone. I only read the first book, missed the second and jumped back in with this one. There's mention of previous characters (as in hero and heroine) but not in a way that would confuse you if you hadn't read the other books. Good luck, Terrill.
