Where Secrets Sleep

GIVEAWAY

PERRY, MARTA
WHERE SECRETS SLEEP

In Amish country, not everything is as simple as it appears...

After suffering a terrible betrayal, Allison Standish flees Philadelphia for the small Amish village of Laurel Ridge. There, she comes into an unexpected inheritance—her late grandmother bequeathed her a mansion housing various shops. Allison intends to sell Blackburn House, until one of her tenants, single father Nick Whiting, challenges everything she believes about her estranged grandmother and the Amish community, and she decides to stay—temporarily.

Soon, strange stipulations in her grandmother's will bring to Allison's door distant relatives and seething townsfolk who think Blackburn House shouldn't belong to an outsider. As anonymous threats escalate, Nick is protective of Allison, and she finds herself falling for the handsome carpenter. But when she discovers her grandmother's death may not have been accidental, Allison must face the truth that someone wants her gone…permanently.

My Review:

A rich blend of mystery and suspense kept me guessing right to the end. There's almost a Gothic element to Blackburn House, with all it's strange secrets and intriguing occupants. I was on edge every time Allison ventured through the doors. Perry expertly builds tension and intrigue along with the sweet allure of romance. A host of compelling secondary characters provoked a multitude of emotional reactions in me -- from delight to exasperation to righteous indignation. And the romance between Nick and Allison is delicately woven into all the action and danger. In fact, that suspenseful backdrop heightens their love story, which kept me on edge right to the end as well.

A perfect romantic suspense -- even for readers who aren't fans of Amish fiction. That's because most of the story deals with the 'English' in town. Only two Amish play a significant role, Allison's friend, Sarah and her mother, Hannah. And while this isn't a Christian Fiction novel (it's published for the general market by HQN), there are still some inspiring conversations between Allison and her Amish friends that I found thought provoking.

  10. I'm surprised this isn't labeled as Christian, as Marta writes for Love Inspired! I have several of hers on my shelf. But in any case....you have mystery/suspense, romance & Amish all rolled in one here! I've read one other "Gothic" tale (Mist of Midnight by Sandra Byrd) & enjoyed every page. Also, I noticed over on Amazon she has another title "When Secrets Strike", and I'm guessing the featured book is the first one of a series? They both sound good to me :-) This would be a nice start.....

    1. Marta Perry also writes for HQN -- all Amish suspense, I believe. They are clean with subtle faith threads -- how can you not bring up faith when you are writing about the Amish?

And yes, this one is the first book in the series. I have read the second one, When Secrets Strike and that review will be up next week. It is just as good -- but centered around the Amish this time.

      Good luck, Trixi.

    2. Ahh, I didn't realize she also wrote for HQN! And I do like faith threads in any book I read, no matter how strong or subtle! As long as they exist :-) But you already knew that!

  16. I'm so happy to see your review for Marta Perry's book. I have picked up this book and When Secrets Strike a number of times at Barnes and Noble, but never committed. I can be a bit nervous with some suspense books, especially if there is a spiritual element. I didn't read any Christian suspense for years after reading This Present Darkness in my early 20's. Since this one isn't directly published for the Christian market, I'm not too worried. (cue nervous giggle) Thanks for the helpful review, Kav. tlhcoupon(at)hotmail(dot)com

    1. Oh...no...I couldn't have read This Present Darkness (Frank Peretti, right?) I consider that kind of book a psychological thriller, where it really messes with your mind (well, my active imagination) and I'm too much of a scaredy cat for that. I do love romantic suspense though. I think you'll be safe with this one. Good luck, Terrill.
