Rodeo Song

GIVEAWAY

VANNATTER, SHANNON TAYLOR
RODEO SONG

Jenna Wentworth found the man of her dreams

But when silken-voiced Garrett Steele set out for stardom, he left Jenna—and his cowboy past—far behind. A chance encounter at one of his concerts propels him back into Jenna's life. But, once burned by love, Jenna must guard her heart against the captivating singer.

Once upon a time, Garrett vowed he'd be a success, no matter what. But that path shattered his soul. His reunion with Jenna makes him long for things he once took for granted. Now he must show her that he's found what he was looking for all along…right here in his hometown.

My Review:

Crackles with a romantic charge from beginning to end. This read is pure romance at its best. I vote Garrett and Jenna best chemistry in a contemporary romance. To say I loved this read would be a gross understatement. And the opening scene -- priceless. It made me as giddy as my school girl days. :-)  Vannatter has tapped into nearly every woman's secret fantasy and brought it to light with humour, tender passion and a great inspirational thread . If you don't melt over Garrett's earnest pursuit of a love once lost you don't have a pulse. Seriously.

Double Agent

GIVEAWAY

PHILLIPS, LISA
DOUBLE AGENT

Danger is her alias.

As a spy, Sabine Laduca works alone. But when she investigates her brother's murder, she's forced into an uneasy alliance with his Delta Force team leader. The CIA taught Sabine to trust no one, and Sergeant Major Doug Richardson is no exception. The handsome soldier hides his own secrets, but nothing will stop Sabine from finding out who killed her brother. Not even when the CIA declares her rogue. Now not only is the killer after her, so is the agency. For the first time, she needs someone—Doug. Because only he can help her find the truth…and only he can keep her safe….

My Review:

Complex plot riddled with treachery at every turn. The wickedly fast-paced delivery left me breathless. Larger than life characters explode off the page like a great suspense show. Has an Alias vibe to it, if you're familiar with the now defunct television series. Very refreshing and completely different from any Love Inspired Suspense I have ever read.

What Follows After

GIVEAWAY

WALSH, DAN
WHAT FOLLOWS AFTER

In 1962, life was simple, the world made sense, and all families were happy. And when they weren't, everyone knew you were supposed to pretend. For the past year, Scott and Gina Harrison have been living a lie. While they show up at family get-togethers in the same car, they've actually been separated for over a year. To keep up the charade, they've even instructed their sons, Colt and Timmy, to lie--to their grandparents, their teachers, and their friends.

Colt, for one, has had enough, so he hatches a plan. He and his little brother will run away from their Florida home, head for their aunt's house in Georgia, and refuse to come home until their parents get back together. But when things go terribly, terribly wrong, Scott and Gina must come to grips with years of neglect and mistrust in order to recover their beloved sons, their love for one another, and their marriage.

In this emotional story, bestselling author Dan Walsh takes you on a journey to rediscover the things that matter most in life--love, truth, and family. With profound insight into the heart of a hurting child, he reminds us that a time will come to look back on hard times and smile, because we'll know that what follows after . . . is not what we expected at all.

My Review:

Walsh knows how to deliver a page-turning read filled with the complexities of life that are all too real. Impeccable pacing drives the delivery of this story at a breakneck speed. Multiple viewpoints enhanced the depth of the read for me; cranked up the suspense, made the romance more poignant, and the inspirational message more powerful.

I devoured What Follows After in a couple of hours. The author's words flow smoothly - sparse where they need to be, but no less descriptive for their brevity. He pulls me in and holds me an emotional hostage until the last word is spent. Love basking in the residual awesomeness of books like this.

A Sensible Arrangement

GIVEAWAY

PETERSON, TRACIE
A SENSIBLE ARRANGEMENT

Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.Answering an advertisement for a "Lone Star bride," she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn't know.

Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.

When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake's yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty's dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.

What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways...
and dreams and secrets collide?

My Review:

Congratulations to the author on her 100th book!!!!! What a milestone!

A Sensible Arrangement is a mail-order bride story with a twist -- instead of the bride headed for a homestead or a ranch in a remote area, Marty arrives in Denver to wed a wealthy banker. (And my goodness, does she know how to make an entrance!) Trouble is, Marty has been raised on a ranch and is no stranger to hard work. She discovers that living in the lap of luxury is even tougher than the endless chores she left behind. I really enjoyed watching Marty trying to navigate Denver's 'elite' society. The ladies in particular put on way too many airs and I was cheering Marty on (goading her really) when she finally took a stand.

A host of secondary characters enriched the plot. Loved Alice in particular and hope that her storyline is continued in the next book. This is the first in the Lonestar Brides series and it looks to be a continuous series as there were several key plot threads left unresolved which I found a bit frustrating because I'm full of questions and suspicions and theories. Guess I'll just have to suffer through until Book Two hits the shelves in June. Thankfully that's not long to wait.

Grave Danger

GIVEAWAY

LEE, KATY
GRAVE DANGER

Bones of contention

When skeletal remains are found on a small Maine island, forensic anthropologist Lydia Muir is sent to investigate. It's Lydia's job to determine whether the homicide happened long ago—or more recently. Island sheriff Wesley Grant seems sure the murder didn't happen on his watch. But when Lydia uncovers the victim's identity, someone goes to great lengths to get Lydia off the island. Wes vows to protect her, but is the handsome lawman holding something back? To help catch a killer, she'll have to trust him—or become the next victim.

My Review:

Woot -- Bones is in the Love Inspired Suspense bullpen! Lydia is a great heroine -- endearingly awkward and nerdy and desperate to prove herself. Wes doesn't want to like her. He's guarding his heart with as much intensity as he guards his island. Talk about amping up the romantic tension! Not to mention the suspense -- you'll be looking over your shoulder while reading this one. There's danger lurking around every corner with enough suspicious characters to keep armchair sleuths on their toes. Awesome read!

Love's Promises

GIVEAWAY

LEESMITH, SANDRA
LOVE'S PROMISES

For Monica Scott, building her late father’s house at Lake Tahoe isn’t an option—it’s a necessary distraction from confusing memories and an uncertain future. But a handsome planner working for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is keeping Monica from moving forward with the project. Never mind that he’s young and charming with a great sense of humor. No one is going to stop Monica from making her father’s dream—and her own—a reality.

All Greg Linsey wants is for his work to mean something. His job at TRPA gives him the opportunity to fight for the environment he loves and make a difference in his small corner of the world. But with the sophisticated Monica Scott’s arrival, his dedication is tested as never before, especially when Monica turns to his unscrupulous nemesis for assistance.

As Greg and Monica’s animosity turns into something far sweeter, can they learn to accept each other’s promises and avoid the growing danger to their lives and hearts?

My Review:

A gripping read that will leave you with lots to ponder. I think Monica's journey affected me the most. She had such a need to be in control and that closed her off from so much, including environmentalist hero, Greg. They're on shaky ground from day one, but Greg wins her over be degrees through the course of the book.

It's Monica's growth arc that made the book for me. She is so tight and contained and...wary when we first meet her. Harbouring a multitude of misconceptions that dictate a lot of her thoughts and actions. She thinks the only way to protect herself  is to maintain control at any cost. Learning to trust people, being able to admit she needs help from time to time was such a painful process for her. But so rewarding in the end.

I loved the environmental aspects in this book, as it's a topic I'm quite passionate about as well. Leesmith does a wonderful job of conveying reverence for God's creation. Rich descriptive text and the solid background research enhanced my read.

Combine all that with a dastardly villain and a twisty plot and you've got an amazing story you won't want to miss.

Bodyguard Reunion

GIVEAWAY

DALEY, MARGARET
BODYGUARD REUNION

Reunions can be deadly...

Teaming up with an old flame is not what bodyguard Chloe Howard would call a smart move. Nine years ago Chloe and T. J. Davenport worked on a case together, fell in love, then went their separate ways. Now she's reunited with the fearless bodyguard to protect a controversial couple on a book tour through Texas. And the reunion reminds Chloe of dreams best forgotten. She knows she has to keep her emotions in check so their clients' protection remains their top priority. Protection that is the only thing keeping them from falling prey to a stalker's deadly schemes.

My Review:

From the attention grabbing hook to the soul-satisfying conclusion, Bodyguard Reunion is a thrill of a read. There are plenty of twists and turns in both the suspense and the romance that kept me on tenterhooks as I devoured page after page.

I love a good reunion story and this is an excellent one. T.J. and Chloe's history keeps coming to the surface as they work together and neither of them can stop playing the 'what if' game. Loved the tension this creates as they grapple with the nine years of living that happened in between. Their determination to remain detached and get the job done slowly erodes as they get to know each other all over again. Loved the way this romance flowed.

And the suspense kept this reader on her toes. I had it partially figured out by the end and was pretty proud of my armchair sleuthing but Daley still managed to surprise me. This is an edge-of-your-seat read that is sure to satisfy romantic suspense lovers' thirst for the next great story.

For Such a Time

GIVEAWAY

BRESLIN, KATE
FOR SUCH A TIME

Powerful Retelling of the Story of Esther

In 1944, blonde and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hide behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric's secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz.

Suspecting her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric's compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she should despise as an enemy.

Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp's prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she is unable to save herself?

My Review:

Wow -- I'm nearly speechless over this one. The romance has an ethereal, fairy tale quality that carries it far away from the gruesome reality of a World War II concentration camp. That stark contrast makes the entire story all the more magical.

But Breslin doesn't flinch in conveying the conditions the Jews have to deal with -- though her readers might. Heart-breaking stuff laced with the strength and determination of an unconquerable people. There were many goosebump moments for me as I read this epic novel. Many tears shed too. I loved the way she paralleled the Book of Esther with the events in For Such a Time. Honestly, a stunning celebration of life and the grace of God in the midst of impossible affliction. This is one incredible read you don't want to miss.

Hearts Rekindled

GIVEAWAY

HALL, PATTY SMITH
HEARTS REKINDLED

"I'm Here to See My Daughter."

She never thought she'd see John Davenport again. Merrilee Daniels Davenport's former husband has returned to their small Georgia town after fighting in the Pacific. And now the soldier is bearing a letter from the little girl he didn't know he had. Merrilee wishes that she and her daughter could lean on John's able shoulders, but her new assignment as a homeland informant won't allow it.

Twelve years have only made Merrilee more beautiful in John's eyes. Back then, he was the proud fool who walked away. Now all he wants is to prove he can be the husband she deserves, and the daddy his daughter needs.

My Review:

This story tugged on my heartstrings so hard it nearly strangled me!!!! There's so much to engage a reader's emotions --  a lost love rekindled,  a young girl's hopeful heart and rampant narrow-minded prejudice. If I wasn't sighing over a tender scene, I was spitting nails over an infuriating one. Hall kept me on an emotional roller coaster ride right until the very end and I enjoyed every second.

The Pelican Bride

GIVEAWAY

WHITE, BETH
THE PELICAN BRIDE

She's come to the New World to escape a perilous past. But has it followed her to these far shores?

It is 1704 when Frenchwoman Genevieve Gaillain and her sister board the frigate Pelican bound for the distant Louisiana colony. Both have promised to marry one of the rough men toiling in this strange new world in order to escape suffering in the old. Genevieve knows life won't be easy, but at least here she can establish a home and a family, without fear of persecution for her outlawed religious beliefs.

When she falls in love with Tristan Lanier, an expatriate cartographer-turned-farmer whose checkered past is shrouded in mystery. Genevieve realizes that even in this land of liberty one is not guaranteed peace. Trouble is brewing outside the fort between French colonists and the native people surrounding them. And an even more sinister enemy may lurk within. Could the secret Genevieve harbors mean the undoing of the colony itself?

My Review:

Utterly fascinating! The rich historical backdrop brings this complex tale a new depth in the historical genre. The details of the time and setting are totally engrossing -- and gut-wrenchingly realistic. It leaves me amazed anew at the courage and tenacity of the women who settled North America.

The complex plot is a definite page-turner. Peril lurks everywhere -- from rampant illness, Indian threats, conniving men, political intrigue not to mention the risks inherent with falling in love. All make for a killer read. You won't want to come up for air until the very last page and then you'll be bereft because it's over.

Loving the Lawman

GIVEAWAY

HERNE, RUTH LOGAN
LOVING THE LAWMAN

Safe in His Arms

Widowed and pregnant, Gianna Costanza comes to Kirkwood Lake with her world in pieces. She's determined to put her life back together after her cop husband's death, and romance definitely isn't part of the plan. But when she meets her new landlord and neighbor, she knows she doesn't stand a chance. Deputy Sheriff Seth Campbell is strong and kind, and more supportive than she ever imagined a man could be. Soon he's sweeping Gianna off her feet. But she doesn't know if he's ready for an instant family—or if she's brave enough to love another lawman.

My Review:

A heartfelt love story that comes alive amidst a stirring combination of conflict and hope. Herne knows how to create characters readers love -- and not just the hero and heroine, though they are easy to become attached to. But the secondary characters play important roles and provide substance to Seth and Gianna's story. They make for a rich read that made me feel a part of the Kirkwood community. And the plot has a unique twist that I found very thought-provoking. Compelling subplots are intriguing in their own right and are sure to increase reader satisfaction. Another winner from a much loved (and thankfully prolific) author.

Whisper Goodbye

GIVEAWAY

JOHNSON, MYRA
WHISPER GOODBEYE

Crippled both physically and emotionally by his war injuries, First Lt. Gilbert Ballard struggles to find himself again in civilian life. After breaking his engagement to Annemarie Kendall, he has found solace in the arms of Mary McClarney, a spunky Irish immigrant nurse he met at the Army and Navy Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Yet Mary’s love for Gilbert goes unreturned.

If it’s not Gilbert’s insane jealousy over his former fiancée’s new marriage, it’s his addiction to pain killers and gambling that thwarts Gil’s own happiness. Worse, Gilbert’s mother, Evelyn, continually reminds him of what he lost when he pushed Annemarie away. Under Evelyn’s critical eye, Mary fights to believe in her worth, wondering if she will ever be enough.

My Review:

Stunning tale of the complexities of post World War I America and the difficulties wounded soldiers had to overcome in order to pick up their civilian lives again. We met Gilbert in the first book of the series, When Clouds Roll By and frankly, he was a difficult character to love. I knew the second book would be his story and I've been anxious to see how Johnson would handle this difficult hero. She did a brilliant job! I felt his struggles, frustrations, temptations and I agonized with him over each hurdle, cheered over his triumphs and was pretty much an emotional wreck by the end of the book!

And God bless Mary McClarney -- the Irish nurse who plays both angel and devil's advocate in their rocky romance. Mary has a wounded past she barely remembers and it colours her reactions to some of Gilbert's struggles but she loves him so completely. My heart just hurt for her.

Whisper Goodbye is an incredible, tumultuous love story that kept me turning pages well into the night. And exquisite read.

My Review:

What a compelling read! A story fraught with angst and characters that will leap from the pages into your heart. And if there was ever a doomed love story -- this one is it! I felt like a ping pong ball ricocheting back and forth -- from toe-curling to heart-wrenching in a nano-second. A Captain for Laura Rose

GIVEAWAY

WHITSON, STEPHANIE GRACE
A CAPTAIN FOR LAURA ROSE

Laura Rose White's late father taught her everything he knew about piloting a Missouri River steamboat. He even named their boat after her. Despite that, it seems that Laura will forever be a "cub pilot" to her brother Joe, because in 1867, a female riverboat captain is unheard of. That is, until tragedy strikes and Laura must make the two month journey from St. Louis to Fort Benton and back in order to save her family's legacy, her home, and the only life she's ever known.

The only way for her to overcome the nearly insurmountable odds is with the help of her brother's disreputable friend Finn MacKnight, a skilled pilot with a terrible reputation. Laura loathes having to accept MacKnight as her co-pilot, especially when she learns she must also provide passage for his two sisters. Straight-laced Fiona has a fear of water, and unpredictable Adele seems much too comfortable with the idea of life in the rough and tumble environment of the untamed river and the men who ply it. Though they are thrown together by necessity, this historic journey may lead Laura and the MacKnights to far more than they ever expected.

My Review:

Whitson's characters come alive against a panoramic backdrop that kept me riveted.I love a book rich in historical detail and this one certainly is. And such a great angle for a historical -- the details of steamboat life are fascinating. A Captain for Laura Rose is the kind of book you can't pull yourself away from. In fact, it's the kind of read that makes you miss your bus stop so you ride the loop around so you can read some more and when you arrive late to work you don't even care. You're only concerned about the fact that you can't continue reading until the bus ride home later in the day. :-)
