Your Beautiful Purpose

LARSON, SUSIE
YOUR BEAUTIFUL PURPOSE

Drawing on her own hard-earned experiences, Susie shows readers how to overcome insecurities, busyness, and other obstacles in order to nurture their walk with God and focus their gifts and passions on their unique God-assignment. With biblical insights and inspiring stories, this action-oriented guide will speak to every woman who has felt a nudge from God to engage with Him on a deeper level and to follow Him to the next place He has for her.
  • Discern the best use of your time and gifts
  • Confidently pursue God's unique desire for you
  • Stretch your faith and deepen your impact
My Review:

This book challenges and asks tough questions that made me stop and ponder. Larson doesn't hold back. She shares candid insights into her own life experience which really struck a chord with me. She made herself vulnerable in order to convey God's love and our individual worth and I appreciate that so much.

Each chapter is filled with pertinent scripture, intimate stories, heartfelt prayer and ends with soul-searching study questions and discussion starters. You can easily read it cover to cover, but Your Beautiful Purpose is also the kind of book that you'll want to return to again and again as individual chapter themes call to you. A lovely addition to your devotional keeper shelf.

Sadie's Prize

GIVEAWAY

DALEY, MARGARET
SADIE'S PRIZE

Sadie Spencer would stop at nothing to help her students. Even if it meant winning a date with one of Oklahoma's most eligible bachelors, Andrew Knight, to get him to listen to their needs. But on their "date," Sadie quickly saw that Andrew was more than the cold businessman she'd assumed he was, and he had a lot more to offer than mere money.

Experience had taught Andrew that he didn't need anyone in his life. Until Sadie began to show him that he could make a difference in her students' lives—and in hers. But though the walls he'd built around his heart were slowly crumbling, would he ever find the courage to make peace with his past so that he could be not only Sadie's prize…but her husband?

My Review:

This is my first experience with Harlequin's new Heartwarming series and I loved the classic romantic feel of the read. While the books in the series don't include an inspirational thread they are clean, family-oriented romances and this one definitely struck an emotional chord with me.

Daley had me from the great first meet in at the beginning of the book until the very end. Pure romance with all its pitfalls. Along with pure reader enjoyment. I loved the way she developed the story, each scene building on the previous one until I was emotionally invested in Sadie and Andrew's outcome. Honest and real and heart-breaking at time, Sadie's Prize is a prize indeed. The perfect choice of the classic romance reader.

But the more time Luke spends around the hardworkingyoung woman, the more he finds himself thinking of things besides revenge. Will Ruthy convince him to give up his destructive path and be swept away by love?

My Review:

Rollicking good fun with enough romance and drama to completely distract the reader from her ordinary life. I know because I read right past my bus stop and ended up with a long walk home!

Connealy is a master of words and pacing. Measured phrases and lightning wit pair to deliver a story that just doesn't stop and that made Swept Away a compulsive read.

Love the multiple title tie-ins. I so love a clever title. And that isn't the only clever thing about this book. An intrinsic plot, substantial characters and whirlwind romance still have me smiling. Connealy delivers perfection once again -- and bonus this is only the first in a new series so fans have a lot more to look forward to.

Sofia's Secret

GIVEAWAY

MACLAREN, SHARLENE
SOFIA'S SECRET

Scandal surrounds Sofia Rogers, a woman in her early twenties, when it becomes obvious she is pregnant and unmarried. Yet nobody knows the real story. And Sofia isn’t about to share it; she would rather bear the shame than face the threat of consequences. When Eli Trent, the new doctor in town, gets involved, the trouble escalates in the form of thievery, arson, and death threats. Nevertheless, Eli is determined to break down the wall of silence behind which Sofia hides her deep, dark secret. He is out to convince her she is not alone and to make her realize that trusting him—and her heavenly Father is the only thing that makes sense.

My Review:

The third in The River of Hope series, Sofia's Secret easily reads as a standalone. MacLaren has created a memorable character in feisty (and stubborn) Sofie Rogers. A young woman faced with insurmountable challenges determined to overcome them all...on her own. Luckily for her Dr. Trent is equally as stubborn and just as determined that Sofia doesn't carry her burdens alone. .

Eli is the stuff classic heroes are made of. Astute, compassionate with a knight-in-shining-armor complex that made this reader's heart swoon more then once. Sofia, unfortunately is made of sterner stuff and she really put the poor doctor through his paces. That made for some frustrating, amusing and eventually tender scenes. MacLaren knows how to pace a romance, leaving her readers frantically turning pages for more.

A solid inspirational thread anchors the romance and uplifts the reader even as it stretches the concept of forgiveness. In all, Sofia's Secret is a definite must-read for the discerning bookworm.

Giveaway Opportunity:

If you would like an opportunity to win a copy of Sofia;s Secret, please leave a comment below or email me at kavluvstoreadATyahooDOTca. If you post a comment and add your email, please use AT and DOT instead of @ and . in the address to protect yourself from spammers. If you enter the draw via email please remember to put the title in the subject line so that it's easy for me to spot your entry. Draw will be held and winner announced on Sunday March 3 2013. Offer open to international readers. Good luck!

The Way of Wise : the Simple Truths of Living Well

LEMAN, KEVIN
THE WAY OF WISE

Do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you." These and other seemingly simple lessons were hard-won for a hardheaded young man who was more "wise guy" than "wise" early in life.

Now, internationally known psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman shares the biblical wisdom that has shaped him into the successful, joy-filled person he is today. With his trademark wit and humorous stories from his personal life, Dr. Leman shows readers how to jump-start or revitalize their lives both spiritually and practically with words from one of the wisest men of all time. (Hint: It's not him.) Dr. Leman offers hope, courage, and a fresh perspective on living a great life, all in a compact, readable package. This lively and inspiring book makes the perfect gift for professionals, graduates, and anyone who could benefit from simple truths for living well.

My Review:

With a combination of cutting humour and hard-hitting truths, Dr. Leman delivers a memorable message in this motivational read. It's also an incredible study on how to draw deep meaning from concise scripture. Leman delves into 6 verses in Proverbs (3:1-6) and comes up with ten life-changing principles which are well worth the read. He has an easy, approachable style where he doesn't preach but shares his own experiences. That makes the message so much more powerful. Definitely a book that will keep you thinking long after the last page.

Shattered

GIVEAWAY

PETTREY, DANI
SHATTERED

Piper McKenna couldn’t be more thrilled that her prodigal brother, Reef, has returned to Yancey, Alaska, after five years. But her happiness is short-lived when Reef appears at her house covered in blood. A fellow snowboarder has been killed. Despite the evidence, Reef swears he’s innocent. And Piper believes him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he’s also sworn to find the truth, and he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With the sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, pursuing the truth in this case could mean the end of Landon’s career.

As Piper wages her own search, the two head deep into Canada’s rugged backcountry–and unexpected complications. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but the search for answers is becoming deadlier with each step.

My Review:

A page-turning, enthralling read with plenty of twists and turns to leave this reader fighting for equilibrium right to the very end. I love the McKenna family. Love the way Pettrey takes the time to show us their relationship, lets us into each individual life. While Piper and Landon are the main characters of this novel, there are plenty of fascinating secondary characters just waiting for their turn in the spotlight. I get the feeling the McKennas are going to become as well known as Henderson's O'Malleys in the Christian fiction world.

The suspense is nail-biting and filled with red herrings. Reading Shattered was like watching a really good crime drama but with layers of romance added in. There are some real toe-curling scenes and plenty of emotional angst to add even more reader satisfaction to the mix. This is a not-to-be-missed read for romantic suspense lover.

Daybreak

GIVEAWAY

GRAY, SHELLEY SHEPARD
DAYBREAK

In this close-knit Amish family, nothing is as perfect as it seems . . .

When Viola Keim starts working at a nearby Mennonite retirement home, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with resident Atle, whose only living relative, son Edward, is living as a missionary in Nicaragua. Viola understands the importance of mission work, but she can't imagine leaving her father in the hands of strangers. Even though her family is New Order Amish, it's not the Amish way, and though she doesn't know Ed, she judges him for abandoning his father.

But when Ed surprises his father with a visit, Viola and Ed both discover an attraction they never expected. Despite her feelings, choosing Ed would mean moving to a far-off country and leaving her family behind. She can't do that. Her twin sister, Elsie, is going blind and will need someone to care for her all her life. Her family is reeling with the recent discovery that her grandmother hid her past as an Englischer. Her father seems forgetful and distracted—and to be harboring some secrets of his own.

Does Viola dare leave them all behind and forge her own life? Or will family ties mean her one chance at love slips away?

My Review:

A multi-generational story that revolves around the complexities of family life. There are so many layers in this book I don't know where to start. Gray does a wonderful job of weaving diverse stories around a common thread.

While Viola and Ed take center stage in Daybreak, the reader is invited into the lives of other members of the Kiem family as well. They aren't your stereotypical Amish family and Gray provides a realistic, sometime gritty view of dysfunction and how it affects generations.

The first in a series, I'm anxious to continue the Kiem's family saga in future books. Gray excels at creating a satisfying standalone story in the midst of a series with common threads. While my reader's heart is immensely satisfied by the conclusion, my interest is piqued over some unanswered questions. Gray always leaves me wanting more.

Bound to the Warrior

GIVEAWAY

PHINNEY, BARBARA
BOUND TO THE WARRIOR

A Heart Unconquered

Widowed Saxon Lady Ediva Dunmow will do anything to protect her people—even marry one of the invading Norman knights. The king sees it as a way to keep Ediva, her lands and her tenants subdued. But Ediva's embittered heart, still healing from the abuse of her first husband, will not yield so easily. Marriage never held any appeal for Adrien de Ries. Yet it is his king's will, and perhaps his Lord's, too—though he finds his faith tested daily by Ediva's staunch refusal to trust him. As a knight, Adrien survived many battles, but the fight to win Ediva's heart may be his most challenging—and rewarding.

My Review:

I do love a great medieval romance and this one is exceptional! It has all the elements I love in a good historical. The author managed to transfer me back in time with her measured descriptions and character dialogue. Neither was overdone. Rather she used these techniques to add flavour to an already savory plot. A forced marriage, political intrigue and two lost souls at cross purposes. I couldn't put Bound to the Warrior down and I bet you won't be able to either.

In this young adult fairy tale retelling by Melanie Dickerson, a woman arrives in Hagenheim claiming the young woman betrothed to the duke’s son, Valten, is still alive. With Valten injured, his younger brother, Gabe, defies his family to find Sophie himself. When Gabe arrives at the castle, Sophie must make a choice: go to the Cottage of the Seven and fend for herself, or trust the handsome stranger who seems ready to do anything to keep her safe.

My Review:

Take a moment to pause and drink in that beautiful cover. Does the book match that outer glow? You betcha! I love fairy tale retellings. There's something so thrilling about knowing the bones of the story while being surprised (and delighted) at the way the author fleshes it out. Dickerson is an expert as this is her third book. If you want to be swept away by a fantastical love story anchored in faith, then this the book for you.

The Cowboy's Healing Ways

GIVEAWAY

MINTON, BRENDA
THE COWBOY'S HEALING WAYS

After being wrongfully convicted of a crime and losing custody of her daughter, all single mother Laura White wants is her little girl back. But she’ll need a job and a real home first. When Dr. Jesse Alvarez Cooper hires her as housekeeper at his Oklahoma ranch, Laura is grateful. The handsome cowboy doctor, with a harrowing past that stretches continents, also vows to help her get her child back. Suddenly, Laura’s dreams may come true—two permanent place settings added around the Cooper family table.

My Review:

A heart-breaking and endearing story filled with warmth and the hope of a better future. Minton has created a delightful cast of characters that makes you want to live next door so you can watch everything transpire first-hand. I loved the secondary characters, mostly made up of the Cooper clan. All love and laughter and fierce loyalty.

Jesse comes by his knight in shining armor gene honestly. :-) He can't help but get involved in Laura's plight just as Laura can't resist the lure of the handsome doctor. Oh, she tries to fight it. She has more important things on her agenda -- like getting her daughter back. But Jesse is kind of hard to ignore. He has his life all planned out and falling in love isn't supposed to come for another five years or so. Watching these two attract and repel made for a fascinating read.

Firefly Island

GIVEAWAY

WINGATE, LISA
FIREFLY ISLAND

At thirty-four, congressional staffer Mallory Hale is about to embark on an adventure completely off the map. After a whirlwind romance, she is hopelessly in love with two men--fortunately, they're related. Daniel Everson and his little boy, Nick, are a package deal, and Mallory suddenly can't imagine her future without them.

Mallory couldn't be more shocked when Daniel asks her to marry him, move to Texas, and form a family with him and motherless Nick. The idea is both thrilling and terrifying.

Mallory takes a leap of faith and begins a sweet, mishap-filled journey into ranch living, Moses Lake society, and a marriage that at times reminds her of the mail-order-bride stories. But despite the wild adventure of her new life, she discovers secrets and questions beneath her rosy new life. Can she find answers on Firefly Island, a little chunk of property just off the lakeshore, where mysterious lights glisten at night?

My Review:

This book isn't so much about falling in love as it is about staying in love. A story with substance and grit, I was quickly caught up in these characters lives. Loved the depth and layering that elevated this book to a must read status.

Told in first person, Mallory is achingly honest and 'real'. There's humour and pain and even despair as the plot unfolds with rich descriptive words that made me feel like I was there with her every step of the way. I love it when an author engages my emotions and Wingate certainly did that!

As an added bonus, there is an intriguing suspenseful sub-plot that causes ripple effects in the lives of a number of characters. Firefly Island is a captivating book destined for many TBR lists. Make sure to slip it to the top of that pile, though. You don't want to miss out on a blessed second!
